President Bush Approves Over the Counter Early Abortion Pill, Pro-Life Base Decries Move

By John-Henry Westen

WASHINGTON, August 21, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - For his pro-life supporter base, President George W. Bush stepped into one of the biggest political landmines of his Presidential career today with his approval of over the counter status for the abortion-causing morning after pill Plan B.

A press release by Human Life International underscored the seriousness of the move as it was titled, "President Bush Files for Divorce with Catholic Base." Rev. Thomas J. Euteneuer, president of Human Life International commented, "President Bush's implied support for the abortion-causing drug Plan B is completely inconsistent with his recent veto of the embryonic stem cell research (ESCR) funding bill. What the president apparently fails to realize is that Plan B kills the same innocent unborn children that the ESCR process does."

At a White House press conference this morning, the President was asked by Bill Sammon a reporter from the Washington Examiner about Plan B and his new FDA commissioner who supports its over the counter status. "Mr. President, some pro-life groups are worried that your choice of FDA Commissioner will approve over the counter sales of Plan B, a pill that, they say, essentially can cause early-term abortions," said the reporter. "Do you stand by this choice, and how do you feel about Plan B in general?"

The President replied, "I believe that Plan B ought to be -- ought to require a prescription for minors, is what I believe. And I support Andy's decision."

Andy, as the President referred to him, is the new Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach. Pro-life groups last week called for von Eschenbach's resignation over his deal with a drug company to make a high-dose of a drug (Plan B, a morning-after pill) available without a prescription to women 18 year of age and older.

Concerned Women for America (CWA) blasted the decision noting that it is ludicrous to allow Plan B without medical supervision when a low-dose of the same drug (birth control pills) requires medical oversight to protect women from serious health complications.

"It is deplorable that the head of the FDA would put his career ambitions and a drug company's interests above women's health," said Wendy Wright, CWA's President. "CWA provided legal and regulatory evidence that the FDA does not have the authority to do what it is proposing and medical evidence that any dose of the drug requires medical oversight to protect women's health. The drug is known to cause serious complications such as blood clots and stroke."

Rev. Euteneuer added, "The president must demonstrate a consistent respect for the sanctity of all human life or he risks provoking a great divorce with the conservative Catholics that compromise a large part of his support base. Human beings in the embryonic stage of development deserve equal protection under the law and the president's position falls far short of that mark."

I know what you mean; if we have a president who agreed with the men on this thread 100%, I'd know for certain the Muslims had taken over and women had zero rights.

True, I will never know either. Obviously. You ask if it makes it o.k. because she may not be aware of whether she prevented a fertilized egg from being implanted? Yes.

It doesn't make it okay. It is still destroying life.

I used contraceptions when I was younger, that prevented fertilization too. Is that bad? No. Is it any of your business or anyone elses? No. Who will judge? God.

It is everyone's business when innocent life is being destroyed!

I need to find some sanity on this thread because otherwise I'm going to be convinced I'm reading posts directly from Tehran.

You're still floating on the river of denial regarding this pill. I tried to throw you a life vest, but you're on your own now. ;)

I respect your opinion, but I strongly disagree with it.

As an ex-pharmaceutical rep who worked for Searle and Schering Plough, here's my take on this pill. The Plan B effect creates a huge spike in the hormone which initiates the uterine lining build up ... this hormone is a trace chemical produced when the follicle has erupted and expelled an ovum, thus the spike is designed to prevent the release of the voum. Hormone cycle feedback is a delicate one and the huge spike results in an eventual inhospitable uterine lining rather than a gradually built up one, thus a menses results shortly rather than two weeks later.

All I can say to the men on this thread is, thank goodness you aren't in charge and thank goodness you aren't in my life.

Peach, with all due respect, you have alikened men that are against abortion and this morning after pill with Muslims and Mullahs simply because they don't agree with you. That's a very shoddy way to debate.

It could be equally said of you that thank God YOU aren't in charge and that all women don't think like you do. If they did, the world would cease to exist because we would abort and birth control ourselves out of existence.

Back to the insults...tisch..tisch...keep it civil...and why are some not allowed to hold the view that after the fact "birth control" is not abortion ??? Seems an intolerant view of others who hold moral positions that differ from yours.. ignorance?? my my...

And the argument that "IF" it prevents and it "might have occurred" then...

Man-- better not drink alcohol ever, take medications ever or even some vitamins ever because IF there's a fertalized egg and they don't know it they could be committing murder since we all know they can be harmful as well.

IF IF IF , maybe, might be....good grief!!

I don't have a problem with this. Isn't "Early Abortion Pill" a misnomer? There's no one to abort.

Hon, with all due respect, it's not you that will have a baby and so yes, I'm delighted you aren't in charge of birth control and what is legal and what isn't legal.

This is NOT the morning after pill. Do you understand that? That's an entirely different matter altogether.

As to your point about mullahs, yes, it was over the top. I also think it's over the top for men to try and dictate birth control for WOMEN and to call this pill things that it is not and to say the president has blood on his hands.

See my post #186 ... it can cause an abortion to an early implantation via the mechanism I explained (or I thought I explained).

This isn't the morning after pill. This isn't Bush with blood on his hands, as some freepers have said.

This is just like the birth control pill. And if you think women are going to sit around and listen to men dictate what should and should not be legal when it comes to birth control, you're living on another planet.

Good point. You know, aspirin can really cause problems. Maybe no one should ever take that.

Exactly. This isn't an early abortion pill because there's nothing to abort.

you're living on another planet. It can clearly function as a morning after pill.....I take it your degree lets you believe otherwise....BTW, I live on the planet where reading is a preferred skill and insulting rhetoric is generally frowned upon. Can't you make your point without disparaging fellow Freepers?

Nope not if they're sexually active that is! In fact, that may explain alot ! Older folks, single folks, widows etc., rarely consider these things because well frankly it is not a possiblity in their lives. Easy to judge.

Oh, but you're fine with freepers saying Bush lied and has blood on his hands? ROFL

I'll stand by my statements. And am proud to stand with the president on this matter who has scientists and researchers who are just a TAD more knowledgeable than the kind of Neanderthals we're seeing on this thread. But thanks anyway for your suggestions.
