Huh. I can talk for hours about hurricanes but I don't know much about earthquakes. I thought you could pinpoint them immediately.

They (USGS) do well in regions that are well instrumented and connected to the supercomputer facility at the Geophysical Institute so they can run their very strange math quickly, but away from Alaska and the West Coast the instrumentation is not so comprehensive and in Antarctica it is rudimentary. If a nuke test, small in tectonic terms, set off a large earthquake, the nuke test might not be found at all.
