This funding a no-brainer

Times are tough and we welcome disciplined spending by Congress but there are some areas of the federal budget that should be immune from slash-and-burn cuts, and that should include the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center. According to USA Today, the center, which is devoted to the treatment and understanding of war-related brain injuries, is set to lise half its funding, from $14 million down to $7 million, next year. "Honestly, they would have loved to have funded it, but there were just so many priorities," a spokeswoman for the Senate Appropriations Committee told the paper. "They didn't have any flexibility in such a tight fiscal year."

And yet they have enough pork to support bridges to nowhere. Tell me again why these morons deserve to get re-elected.

"Tell me again why these morons deserve to get re-elected."

They don't. But we keep voting for them.

Question. Do you vote for the party or for the candidate?

The truth might be that the funding of only ONE (private and civilian for-profit business) segment of this system has has its funding cut.....look at the entirety of the DVBIC sites.....the rest are funded thru DOD or VA.....

Where are DVBIC sites located?

DVBIC sites located at:
Military Treatment Facilities (MTF): Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC
Wilford Hall US Air Force Medical Center, Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston/ Lackland Air Force Base, TX
Naval Medical Center-San Diego, San Diego, CA

Veterans Affairs (VA) Sites: Hunter McGuire VA Medical Center, Richmond, VA
James A Haley VA Hospital, Tampa, FL
Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Minneapolis, MN
VA Palo Alto Health Care System, Palo Alto, CA

Civilian Partner Site: Lakeview Virginia NeuroCare, Charlottesville, VA

The USA Today article gives the impression that the cuts are not restricted to just the civilian component.
http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2006-08-08-brain-center_x.htm

A plausible motive may come from the last sentence: The Center has said that up to 20% of front-line infantry could have brain injuries. That's a BIG public relations problem, if true. The (human) cost of the war skyrockets and, as for the impact on recruiting... What mother would let her son join the Army with odds like that?

The Center has said that up to 20% of front-line infantry could have brain injuries

Up to 100% could have hemorrhoids, too. But since McPaper doesn't definitely state exactly what percentage of front line troops actually do have brain injuries this 'article' slides from the realm of reporting the news to mere speculation.

Evidently, you must have a serious brain injury to be elected to congress.

Cutting funds for this while continuing to increase the subsidization to morbidly obese welfare ho's and buying drugs for the most affluent age segment in our society is......

Well it's not any sort of conservatism, compassionate or not.

I'll gently remind you that this article is from the Boston Herald. It's quite likely there is an agenda behind this one.

Something along the lines of "Heartless Republican House Cuts Funding For Brain Damaged Soldiers-Women And Minorities Hardest Hit". I imagine we'll be hearing lots of sympathy for the troops from newspapers like the Herald right up until election day.

But I'll generally not argue with your assessment of the cognitive function of your average CongressCritter.
