My husband had to do the same thing on a flight...he got up, and said: "Ma'am, would you please ask your child to stop kicking the back of my seat?"
It stopped immediately. LOL.

Xenalyte, I believe this is an excellent example of how you could have stopped it without acting in a way that some (including myself) might perceive as threatening.
