Serious question - I've always been curious as to how one reconciles this with the biblical version of the origins of man..

No way to tell. But the neanderthal is no friend of Charles Darwin or of evolutionists. The concensus of scientific opinion is that the neanderthal made no contribution to the genetic makeup of modern man, is much too far genetically removed to be a plausible ancestor for modern man, and all other hominids are much further removed THAN the neanderthal.

That leaves no plausible evolutionary antecedant for modern man on this planet.
