Mike Douglas, who drew on his affable personality and singing talent during 21 years as host of a syndicated television talk show, died Friday on his 81st birthday, his wife said.
The afternoon talk show, which aired from 1961 to 1982, featured Douglas' ballad and big-band singing style, other musicians, comedians, political personalities and sports figures. His interviews included seven men who were then, had been or would become president.
Awww, bummer. I used to watch his show when I got home from school.
Totie Fields.
Then Phil Donahue changed all that. And Geraldo, and Oprah, and Sally Jesse Rafael.
"That Mike Douglas, he made me moist . . . "
I remember him and his show from my boyhood. Bless him.
Hey, I think you're right about at least Hayley Mills playing a twin. I believe that Mills was in Disney's first "Parent Trap."
I remember the one about Kitty Wells marrying Conway Twitty. Her name would be "Kitty Twitty".......
I wish that entertainers would again embrace decency or at least try to fake it.
If Tuesday Weld married Hal March the Second,She would be Tuesday,March the Second.
bump for later
I remember Tootie Fields as co-host one time when Mickey Rooney came on. She said "Hi Mickey, you probably don't remember me,I was your first wife."
LOL!! Love it!
I was another one of those kids!
Great show, clean, wholesome. Nothing like it on TV today.
Rest in peace Mr. Douglas. Thanks for the memories.
Yeah. You, me, and Dobie Gillis.
Yeah, Mike was an after school show for me, too. And good to hear that some of the kids aren't totally desensitized to commercial excess. I've literally had my jaw drop at some of those "colon cleansing" products being advertised.
Mike was so good with all generations in that weird time that his show was big. I remember he'd often have co-hosts who were much younger and more "hip" than Mike, but they always ended up getting along just fine. I remember he had John and Yoko co-host for a week once, and I vaguely remember it was fun. the co-host thing was a great idea, because his hosts would ask questions of guests from their own experience, so it was more than just Mike doing the quizzing.
He really was an excellent, friendly, and quite smart fellow. God bless him.
