Explosive Gel Was to Be Concealed in Sports Drink
ABC News. com ^ | 8/10/2006 | Richard Esposito

The suspected terror plotters arrested in Britain had planned to conceal their liquid or gel explosives inside a modified sports beverage drink container and trigger the device with the flash from a disposable camera.

ABC News has learned exclusively that the plotters planned to leave the top of the bottle sealed and filled with the original beverage but add a false bottom, filled with a liquid or gel explosive.

This, they thought, would ensure that they would be able to pass through security -- even if they were asked to unseal and drink the beverage.

The flash in a disposable camera has enough electrical power, they apparently believed, to set off the homemade explosive.

There are any number of homemade or modified commercial liquids that would have made effective explosives, with enough energy to damage or destroy a plane.

I understand what you're saying, but this may put an end to my travels by air. I'm a cancer survivor but one of the side effects of the radiation was damage to the saliva glands. Simply put, I don't produce none no mo....so, I have to carry a bottle of water with me constantly. If you've ever awakened with that dry, lips-sticking-to-your-teeth, kinda morning, well, that's the way it is for me all the time. I have to have the water or I start to gag and choke....so it's not like I can't go without it for a few hours.....yup, it may mean me driving cross country to see the grand-kiddies....crap.....

I'm sure the airlines will adjust if this is a long-term situation and provide their own beverages for medical needs. It might cost you to have it but surely they will come up with a solution.

100% correct.

In typical TSA overreaction all liquids are banned without any thought given to the real threat and the cost of the fix.

If gatorade is the problem, then ban colored liquids. But no reason to throw out the baby with the bathwater (errr, bottled water).

Couldn't a water or gel under-wire bra be used?

Not certain how it would be ignited, though. ;)

I think the line is "I have HAD IT with these mutha*&@#*$ Muslims on this mutha8(#&$*@# plane!!"

Hey, I'd go to see Samuel L. Jackson smack down a bunch of Muslims on a plane. And then stand up afterwards and proclaim, "Mmmm, this is a tasty falafel!"

Nitroglycerin, also known as nitroglycerine, trinitroglycerin, and glyceryl trinitrate, is a chemical compound. It is a heavy, colorless, poisonous, oily, explosive liquid obtained by nitrating glycerol. It is used in the manufacture of explosives, specifically dynamite, and as such is employed in the construction and demolition industries. It is also used medically as a vasodilator to treat heart conditions. (Source: Wikipedia)

Great....at some point we'll ALL be stripping down to skivvies and donning paper drapes to get aboard....

Yup. I won't be suprised at all when Americans allow themselves to be subjected to exactly that.

There will be beverages on the plane. Get a doctor's note as backup when you ask for three.

Ripping them apart to get the film out, you quickly learn (the hard way) the places to avoid with your metal screwdriver. If it makes you jump a few feet, curse and then laugh, you figure why not share that experience with your coworkers.

The "no liquids" policy must be in place on the space shuttle now. :)

The guy who worked at Heathrow had an "all access" pass to the entire airport, according to my local ABC News.

I recently bought a drink in London which was completely covered in an opaque shrink-wrapped label.
