"Poet Maya Angelou, left, sits with television talk show host Oprah Winfrey at a roundtable discussion on ending poverty, one of the many forums taking place during the Clinton Global Initiative summit. Tickets to a fundraiser for Bennett College featuring Winfrey and Angelou sold fast in the first day of public sale. The private Greensboro,N.C., school for black women sold all 300 tickets available Monday Aug. 7, 2006, bringing in more than $100,000 for the Oct. 20 event."

The first time I ever heard Maya Angelou's poetry was when my office partner and I had the 1992 Clinton inauguration on the radio (we had hoped that Rush was going to be on instead). Angelou read some of her poetry and we both asked simultaneously "What the hell is this crap?"

Maya: I'm bored. Hey, Oprah, so are you a lesbian or not?
Oprah: Yes I do, but not with you.
Maya: So what are we going to do now?

It still cracks me up that that this thing is called the "Clinton Global Initiative," or "CGI." Of course, CGI also stands for "computer generated image," or virtual reality -- making something which isn't real or has no substance in the real world, look real. This description also applies to the "Clinton Global Initiative."

I wonder if anyone at this conference suggested that poverty isn't caused by lack of public spending, but by the attitudes and choices of people in poverty.

Poet Maya Angelou, left, sits with television talk show host Oprah Winfrey
as the two glumly realize that the majority of the U.S. population that contributes
to society does not give two hoots what they think or say.
