Cokie Roberts Shocks George Stephanopoulos: Lamont Victory Disaster For Democrats
NewsBusters ^ | August 7, 2006 | Noel Sheppard

Posted on 08/07/2006 5:04:45 AM PDT by samtheman

Something amazing happened on ABC’s “This Week” Sunday: Cokie Roberts practically floored host George Stephanopoulos with the political truth that most impartial individuals already know (video to follow). The discussion centered on what it would mean for the Democratic Party if Ned Lamont beat Joe Lieberman in Connecticut next week. Stephanopoulos asked Roberts, “How did this happen?” After a somewhat lengthy explanation, Roberts said, “But it's, I think, a disaster for the Democratic Party, and it's going to be very interesting to see what happens as a result of it.”

My guess is if Lieberman loses, Bush will tap him for a cabinet secretary slot.

I agree, GWB would find a spot for him.

Cokie is 'right on the mark'!

Democrats will do well in '06--but this Lieberman fiasco will HIGHLIGHT AND UNDERSCORE the fact that the democrats have gone off the deep end--particularly in the ONE AREA that has hurt them most--their incredible weakness on NATIONAL SECURITY AND DEFENSE ISSUES!

National defense is the bane of the democrats--and this will hurt them big-time in '08 (as if they need even more focus on their weakness and willingness to appease).

"I think, a disaster for the Democratic Party, and it's going to be very interesting to see what happens as a result of it."

If Lamont wins, Lieberman may run as an independent and spit the Democratic vote, allowing the Republican to win the Senate seat.

Maybe she is referring to the fact that Lieberman intends to run as an independent if he loses in the primary - splitting the dim vote.

Good for the Republicans; Lieberman will run as an independent and split the RAT vote. That's really the only way a Pubbie has a chance.

he [ Bill Clinton] was a Democrat in the middle from the south with a very strong acquaintanceship with scripture.

Is "Put some ice on that" in the bible?

WHY would Bush want a whiny ass, not good for anything but talking, DEMOCRAT in his cabinet??

Bush left all the democrats in the governmental agencies, why not his cabinet?

You do realize that if Lieberman were to be selected for a cabinet position Algore will have to be straitjacketed?

My fearless prediction: Lieberman wins a squeaker tomorrow.

I agree with you. Lamont will turn out to be a bust like Howard Dean. The MSM and the polls get it wrong once again.

Lieberman will not lose CT. He will likely lose the Dem primary, but will then run as an independent and win, most likely with a majority, not just a plurality.

Like most of the nutroots, I just don't see it as a big deal. I guess they can finally claim to have 'won' (against a democrat) but there will be no change in who actually votes in the Senate.

I don't think he will run as an independent.

I think lieberman will be offered "job security" in the private sector to keep him out.

I agree with you.I think if Lieberman runs as an Independant in the general election he will clean Lamonts clock.Lamont is too liberal even for a state like Connecticut and I ought to know,I live there.

I recommend LIEberman for the job of men's room attendant.

The biggest boost Joe Lieberman could have gotten was yesterday's appearance of nutty Howard Dean's brother, Tommy, on Meet the Press. Lanni Davis, the automaton who kept denying Lieberman's support of GWB on the WOT, was also there and the interesting thing to me was that, while Davis is a total rat and apologist, at least he had the decency to show up in a suit and tie.

Mismatched Mr. Dean wore a grey suit jacket, casual blue shirt opened at the neck, NO TIE, and tan slacks. He looked like a total loser. If the devil is in the details, then knowing that this sort of guy, Lamont's spokesman and Howard Dean's brother, would go on a national TV program, one watched by both sides, and his attire was more suited to sitting on a barstool, then I am not the least bit surprised that Joe got a bounce. Did you ever see Howard Dean's wife?
It was the same thing, a total bum with the Birkenstocks, no hairstyle, crunchy granola tattooed on her forehead. It is said that Hillary Clinton is very sloppy about her personal grooming. Don't these people even realize that appearances matter when trying to get votes?

Joe Lieberman is a very classy, old time guy. Howard's brother couldn't have illustrated the differences in mindset better if he had tried.

got to agree with you on that one, things I've read so far is that if lieberman runs as an Independant, he'll take 68 to 70% of the vote.

There is nothing like a Howard Dean meltdown in the cards., The election is tomorrow and the Dean meltdown occurred many weeks before the primaries ended. I don't claim to know what will happen tomorrow but I have heard it said here that is Lamont wins it will be a disaster for the Democrat party. probably true, but what happens if Lieberman wins? How will the fringe lest, their base, react? Will they fold their tents and go home for the cycle? Or will they redouble their hateful rhetoric and make even more obvious to Americans the extent of their hate America, love terrorist positions?
