Lieberman makes final case to Conn. Dems

EAST HAVEN, Conn. - Two days before the Democratic primary, U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman made what he called his closing argument on his record Sunday as he tries to gain ground on upstart challenger Ned Lamont, who is leading in the latest poll.

Lieberman, a three-term incumbent and his party‘s vice presidential candidate in 2000, has been dogged by liberal Democrats angry at him for supporting the war in Iraq . Lamont, a political newcomer and founder of a cable company, has capitalized on the war‘s unpopularity in Connecticut by accusing Lieberman of being too close to Republicans and President Bush .

"I am the only Democrat in America to run against George Bush in a national election twice," Lieberman said. "You know why I ran for president in 2004? Because I believe that his agenda was wrong for our country and our future. And that‘s the truth."

"We are going to combat that in the next 48 hours with a positive message about Joe Lieberman‘s record," Smith said.

"We‘re the guys trying to talk about the issues every step of the way," Lamont said. "We‘ve accepted every debate offer around the state. We wanted to have an old-fashioned debate about the issues."

A Quinnipiac University poll released last week showed the Greenwich businessman leading Lieberman 54 percent to 41 percent. Smith called the polls unreliable.

Sonja Duarte, 40, of East Haven, said Lamont has her vote.

Lieberman, at his campaign rally, said he has opposed nearly major domestic issue Bush has backed, including a ban on stem cell research and a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage.

Lieberman laid out his stance on Iraq, saying he did support the resolution giving the president authority to take out Saddam Hussein , as did many Senate Democrats.

He criticized the president for not having a plan to win the peace and for a shortage of troops and allies.

Four Connecticut newspapers on Sunday endorsed Lieberman.

The Norwich Bulletin, The News-Times of Danbury, New Haven Register and The Day of New London questioned Lamont‘s newness to statewide politics, while praising the Iraq war debate that he brought to the campaign.

Hey Joe is getting a taste of the democrat lies, obfuscations and plain ole bs usually reserved for conservatives. He richly deserves it.

Lieberman cast his lot with the wacko party. If you are going to hang with rabid dogs, you shouldn't be surprised when they turn on you.

I have no special dislike towards Joe, but I can't feel sympathy for any Democrat in this situation. He made himself look pretty bad when he morphed his views to be like Gore in order to get the VP nomination.

To grossly paraphrase Woody Allen (God help me), "Why would he want to be part of a club that wouldn't have him as a member?

Excellent point.

It seems to me that Jews are also considered field workers on the liberal "plantation". I suspect that the Howard Deans of the party show a different face on the subject of Jews when behind closed doors. It's no great secret FDR's attitude towards Jews was one of political expediency.

Hmmm....in my mind, running for the Presidential nomination and failing to get it is not running against the opposition party President. I'm not even sure that running for Vice President is running against the Presidential nominee.

Goodbye Joe,
you gotta go!

If for nothing else it was for that wet kiss he gave Bill Clinton on the floor of the Senate in 1998 - the "You better not do this again, 'cause I really mean it this time..." speech that earned him, in the eyes of the media, the profile in courage award. Mildly castigating Clinton at that time was not courage, calling for his resignation wouldn't have been courage, it was merely duty at that point.
