Republican State Senator Joins Democratic Party (Oklahoma)

Oklahoma City (AP) - The state Senate gained a Democrat and lost a Republican today.

Senator Nancy Riley says she's switching from the Republican to the Democratic Party because the G-O-P is being taken over by the extreme right wing.

Riley says she was completely ignored by the Republican caucus during this year's legislative session. She believes her treatment is because of her moderate views and because she's a woman.

The move increases the Democrat's majority in the Senate to 26-to-22 and Riley is in the middle of her four-year term so she doesn't face re-election this year.

Democratic Senator Mike Morgan says Riley's move shows momentum is shifting back to the Democratic Party.

Riley recent finished third in a three person race for the Republican nomination lieutenant governor but surprised many by getting 23 percent of the vote.

I'd like to introduce her to a new friend:

Maybe we can get him to switch and we'd be rid of him for good.

OK, my mistake. I thought you were talking about the female population. It always makes me nervous when women get elected to anything. They're just 'softer', whatever that means.

And you don't have to even go as far back as Jimmah. Look how many voted Jean Francois in '04 or your pal Al before that. Check and see how many Democraps in Congress. Ted Kennedy is the ranking member of the Senate Committee for Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. That same committee includes intellectual heavyweights like Barbara Boxer. There are always way too many idiots.

Although Michael Decker's switch converted a 61-59 Republican majority to a 60-60 tie and resulted in House Speaker Jim Black retaining his position in a unprecedented co-speaker deal with Republican Richard Morgan, Jim Black maintains that he had nothing to do with the switch. This is after Black has already been involved in a scandal with the new state lottery and in accepting checks from fellow optometrists with the recipient's name left blank. I could go on and on, but you get the picture. Of course, the NC Dems are ready to oust him from his position - NOT. He reminds me of Bill Clinton on a much smaller scale. Nothing seems to stick to him. On the bright side, Michael Decker has promised to testify for the state against an "unnamed Democrat" so Black's luck may finally be about to run out.

She believes her treatment is because of her moderate views and because she's a woman.

Not per the article. Some join the party, and some leave. Such is life. If she thinks she is ignored because she is a woman, she probably would be better off in the other party. She has that victimization mentality, which fits in so much more seamlessly with the other party, as I am sure that you would agree.

She will regret her move. In the fall elections the Republicans should become the major party in Oklahoma. Many of the Demorats are term limited.

She ought to get some perspective. If she thinks she'll make out better as a woman in the OK 'Rat party, she's in for a surprise. All of OK's female statewide and federal officeholders have been Republicans. Not a single female 'Rat has ever won a federal office. We'll be sending another come January with Lt Gov Mary Fallin.

Apparently she wasn't a Republican because of her "convictions".

No, not until 2008. Oh, well, it's a free country.

Yeah, I know. We just don't have the quality politicians like you guys down in Texas do. /sar Which reminds me, how is Kinky Friedman doing in his campaign for governor? I hear Imus is bankrolling him and giving him a lot of free publicity on his radio program.

The country would benefit from a few more of these "Charles Barkley" Republicans.
