Chronicle of terror : one ordinary month in Balochistan (Pakistan's province)

July 1

Two security force (SF) personnel were injured in a landmine blast on June 30, official sources said. However, a spokesperson for the banned Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), Azad Baloch, while accepting responsibility for the incident, claimed that the two had died.Meanwhile, violence intensified in Balochistan with SFs and insurgents claiming to have inflicted heavy damage on each other. SFs claimed killing three insurgents and injuring two in a clash at Nal in Kohlu district. However, Azad Baloch rejected Government claims and said that they had killed nine SF personnel. Unconfirmed reports said that 180-armed men had been injured in several hours of firing at Chachi Kech in the Kohlu district.

July 2

Suspected insurgents exploded four bombs at the railway track near the Quetta-Noshki highway, three kilometres north of Noshki district, several hours before a train bound for the Iranian border town of Zahedan was due to pass on June 30. Sources said a 36-feet section of the track was damaged and rail services between Iran and Pakistan were suspended.

July 3

Two Frontier Corps (FC) personnel were injured when militants fired rockets on Bibi Nani FC checkpost in Mach on July 2.Separately, unidentified assailants injured a FC personnel, who was aboard a goods train as a security guard, in Sibi.

July 4

Three rockets hit the Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) building in Sui in the Balochistan province on July 3 causing minor damage to the building. No casualty was reported.Separately, unidentified gunmen attacked a security check-post near Sibi. Officials said that at least 50 rockets had been fired at the post.

July 5

Daily Times reports that unidentified gunmen shot dead Abdullah Samad Achakzai, general secretary of the Pashtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party and his bodyguard in an ambush at Shella Bagh in the Qilla Abdullah district of Balochistan, on July 4.Separately, suspected tribal militants fired more than 110 rockets at security check posts in the Lehri area of the Sibi district. Two rockets were also fired at the Sui gas plant. However, there were no reports of casualties.

A security check post at Bibi Nani Ziarat area in the Mach district also came under rocket attack. The attack was followed by a gun battle between the security forces and the attackers. Two security personnel sustained minor injuries.

Elsewhere, unidentified gunmen exploded two power transmission towers in the Barkhan district on July 4 disrupting power supply to Kohlu and other surrounding towns.

July 6

Daily Times reports that the security forces (SF) personnel backed by helicopter gunships targeted hideouts of tribal militants in the Sangsila area of the Dera Bugti district in Balochistan, killing at least 25 suspected militants on July 5. A large cache of weapons, including rockets, landmines and other ammunitions were seized during the operation. “During a two-hour operation, security forces killed at least 25 militants and wounded several others,” a Balochistan government spokesman Raziq Bugti said in Quetta.Separately, four persons including a woman and a child were seriously wounded as a powerful bomb exploded at Qili Spain in Quetta. Another bomb explosion was reported in Gadai.

Meanwhile, militants in Balochistan claimed to have shot down a military helicopter on July 5.

July 8

Daily Times has reported that tribal militants claimed to have shot dead at least seven security force (SF) personnel in separate clashes in Balochistan on July 7.Meanwhile, at least 14 civilians were wounded when a bomb exploded at the crowded Suraj Ganj bazaar in Quetta on July 7.

Separately, two civilians were wounded in a grenade attack in Gwadar. In another incident, suspected tribal militants blew up a gas pipeline at Kohlu.

July 9

Daily Times reports that on July 8 unidentified militants attacked a check post on the Sui-Kashmore Road in the Balochistan province, killing Punjab Rangers’ soldier Nawazish Ali and wounding two others. Officials said the assailants retreated after retaliatory fire by security forces.Separate rocket attacks on security force check posts were reported in Pathar Nalla, Looti and Thoba Nokani localities of Dera Bugti. However, no loss of life was reported.

Separately, suspected militants blew up the Sui-Kashmore power transmission line on July 7 night, suspending power supply to the Sui and Dera Bugti districts.

July 10

Daily Times quoting official sources reports that at least 23 tribal militants were killed in a series of strikes against militant hideouts in the Sangsilla and Bamboore areas of the Dera Bugti district in the Balochistan province between July 8 and 9. The security forces have also claimed to have neutralised seven terrorist training camps in the raids and a huge cache of long-range rockets were seized. While, at least 50 militants have also surrendered to the government forces. The Balochistan government spokesman Raziq Bugti termed the ongoing action as a ‘search operation’. Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Jamhoori Watan Party denied the government claims about the killing.Separately, SF foiled an attempt to blow up the Loti gas plant near Dera Bugti and detained four suspected militants in this connection.

July 11

Daily Times quoting official sources reports that at least 40 tribesmen belonging to the Bugti tribe have surrendered to the government on an unspecified place and day. Talking to the Pakistan Television on July 10, the Dera Bugti District Coordination Officer Abdul Samad Lasi said that the men belonged to the Baqlai and Ferozani branches of the Bugti tribe.Meanwhile, six persons, including a security force (SF) personnel belonging to the Frontier Corps, sustained serious injuries after a security vehicle hit a landmine in the Sangsilla area of the Dera Bugti district on July 10.

Separately, unidentified gunmen fired eight rockets at the FC Bhadur check post in the Kohlu district. There were no reports of any casualties.

July 12

A Pakistan Coast Guard (PCG) employee, Mohammad Riaz, was killed in a bomb blast at PCG office in Hub on July 11.Meanwhile, Daily Times reports that the Balochistan police claimed to have arrested at least 15 militants allegedly involved in firing rockets, bomb blasts and other activities from various unspecified places of the Balochistan province on July 11.

Dawn has reported that security forces (SF) personnel used helicopter gunships to attack militants’ hideouts at Gori and Sangsilla areas of the Dera Bugti district. Unspecified reports said that the bombing killed several persons, including women and children. However, official sources denied having suffered any casualties.

Elsewhere, armed tribesmen fired several rockets at the Sui gas field in Sui on July 11.

July 13

Daily Times quoting official sources reports that four top commanders of Brahamdagh Bugti, Jumma Khan, Wadera Ali Gul, Rahi m Khan and Ali Murad, along with 40 armedmen surrendered to the government at an unspecified place on July 12. However, the Jamhoori Watan Party (JWP) refuted the official claims.Separately, suspected tribal militants fired seven rockets at a Frontier Corps check posts in Hernai. Several rockets were also fired upon gas wells in Sui. However, the rockets failed to explode.

July 14

Suspected tribal militants fired 18 rockets at security check posts in the Pirkoh area of Dera Bugti district on July 13. No casualties were reported.Earlier on July 12, suspected tribal militants fired several rockets and short-range missiles on Sui and Pir Koh gas fields and security check-posts in the Khost area. Five security force (SF) personnel were reportedly wounded.

July 15

Daily Times reports suspected tribal militants claimed to have killed at least 14 security force (SF) personnel in two separate incidents in the Dera Bugti district on an unspecified day. One Wadera Alam Khan, who called the Quetta Press Club via a satellite phone from an unspecified place on July 14, said that they had killed eleven SF personnel in the Pashinbogi area. While, a land mine explosion killed three Federal Corps’ (FC) officials and injured another three at an unspecified place. Officials’ sources, however, denied the claims.Daily Times quoting official sources reports that two top commanders belonging to the militia of tribal chief Nawab Akbar Bugti, Wadera Khan Mohammad Masuri and Riaz Gul Masuri, have surrendered to the government along with 38 other tribesmen at an unspecified place and time.

Meanwhile, President Pervez Musharraf, speaking at a meeting in Islamabad on July 14 ruled out any compromise with the “miscreants” who, he said, were sabotaging peace and development activities in the Balochistan province. “The government will make all efforts for accelerating the pace of development in Balochistan and for establishing its writ,” Musharraf said.

July 16

On July 15, tribal militants claimed to have killed at least nine security forces personnel in various parts of Dera Bugti district. Wadera Alam Khan, spokesman for the tribesmen, said “A landmine blast at Waliani Darbar killed three security men and injured another five.” He further said that militants killed many security forces in the Pakka Qila area. “We believe that the death toll in Pakka Qila is six, but the exact number is not known yet”, he said.Two prominent commanders of tribal chief Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti, identified as Wadera Khan Mohammad Masori and Riaz Gul Bugti, along with 600 tribesmen, surrendered to the government on July 15, officials sources said. Balochistan government spokesperson Raziq Bugti told Daily Times that the tribesmen’s surrender was a major breakthrough for the government in its efforts to eliminate Nawab Bugti’s domination over his area. He said, “Bugti has been pushed into a state of isolation. He is rapidly losing control over the tense area with the passage of each day. His own aides are daily ditching him in huge numbers.”

July 17

Nine persons were wounded in a bomb explosion at Barkhan town in the Balochistan province on July 16.Earlier on July 15, twelve commanders owing allegiance to Nawab Akbar Bugti, surrendered before the authorities along with 80 supporters at Bekar in the Dera Bugti district.

Daily Times has reported that the government has put two prominent members of the Jamhoori Watan Party (JWP), Senator Agha Shahid Bugti and Humayun Khan Marri, under house arrest since July 16.

Meanwhile, security force (SF) personnel have rescued three policemen abducted by tribal militants from Nasirabad district in April 2005 from an unspecified place on July 16.

July 18

Daily Times reports that a security force (SF) personnel belonging to the Frontier Corps, Nazim Shah, was killed in a land mine explosion at Sangsilla in the Dera Bugti district on July 17.Meanwhile, Wadera Ghulam Mohammad Jujrani, a commander of the Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti,’s militia along with 20 other tribal militants, surrender to the government at an unspecified place in the Dera Bugti district on July 17.

Elsewhere, SF arrested a Taliban commander, Nawa Killi, and 42 Afghans during raids conducted in different areas of Quetta city on July 17.

Daily Times reports that the British government on July 13 declared the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) as a terrorist organization. BLA is fighting for an independent nation encompassing areas in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran dominated by the Baloch ethnic group.

July 19

The Balochistan police claimed to have arrested around 100 Afghan nationals during raids conducted at several places in the Dera Bugti district on July 18 for illegally staying in the province. Most of the Afghans arrested from various seminaries.Meanwhile, two top commanders of the Nawab Akbar Bugti’s militia and some 280 of their supporters surrendered to the government at Kalpar House in the Dera Bugti district on July 18.

July 20

Balochistan police arrested two suspected Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) cadres, Babu Allah Bakhsh and Sher Mohammed during a raid at Naushki in the Dera Bugti district on July 19.Dawn reports that the security force (SF) personnel have launched a massive operation against ‘farari camps’ in the hilly areas of Harnai, Sibi and Karmo-Wadh in the Dera Bugti district since July 19. Officials said that SF had neutralised several terrorist camps. Further details are unavailable.

July 21

Security force (SF) personnel arrested three Lashkar-e-Jangvi (LeJ) cadres, Abdullah, Sajid and Mohammed Akram, from Khuzdar in the Balochistan province on July 20.Separately, Daily Times quoting official sources reports that three of Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti’s aides, Mohammad Iqbal Bugti, Lal Bugti and Thaya Bugti, have surrendered to the authorities at an unspecified place in the Dera Bugti district.

SFs belonging to the Frontier Corps recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition including 90 landmines, 51 shells of 40 mm rockets, a Russian rifle along with 89,000 rounds, 180 hand grenades, 180,000 Kalashnikov rounds, 1,000 metres of detonator wire, 201 shells of 81 mm mortar, two boxes of fuses and 10 batteries of surface-to-air missiles from Toba Nokani in the Dera Bugti district.

Meanwhile, President Pervez Musharraf said that the tribal rebels in Balochistan are being supplied arms by foreign elements and are getting their weapons from Afghanistan. He also said that the leaders of the Bugti and Marri tribes are subjugating their own people to generate money to finance their private wars with the government, reports Daily Times.

July 22

Dawn quoting official sources reports that six top commanders, of the Nawab Akbar Bugti’s militia along with 500 armed tribesmen have surrendered separately to the authorities in Sui and Dera Bugti on July 21. DCO of Dera Bugti Abdul Samad told reporters in Sui on July 21 that intensive search operations are continuing in different parts of the Dera Bugti district. He further states that about 40 ‘ferari camps’ have been completely smashed and about 1,000 armed tribes men have surrendered to the administration during the past month.Meanwhile, security force (SF) personnel seized a huge cache of heavy weapons from the Toba Hutkani area of the Dera Bugti district on July 21. The seized weapons include 75mm recoilless rifles, 12.7mm guns, LMGs, RPGs, RPG-7, SMG, surface-to-air missiles (SMA), stinger missiles, anti-tank and anti-personal mines, Dragnov rifles, automatic grenade launchers and 122mm missiles.

Elsewhere, senator Agha Shahid Bugti, general secretary of the Jamori Watan Party (JWP), on July 21 accused the government for targeting the families of Baloch political leaders for political victimisation. Agha Shahid Bugti, who had been kept under house arrest in Quetta since last week said that the government in order to hide its failure to deal with the Balochistan situation, was illegally detaining the members of their families. “On June 23, intelligence agencies kidnapped my nephew Jamal Bugti from Sariab Road. On July 14, Bilal Bugti, my brother and Murtiza Bugti, my cousin, were kidnapped by the intelligence agencies in order to pressurise us to give up our just political struggle for Baloch rights,” he said.

July 25

Three tribal commanders of the Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti’s militia, Rehmat Bugti, Attaullah and Gul Hassan, along with 17 other tribesmen surrendered to the Frontier Corps authorities at Haideri check post in the Dera Bugti district on July 24.Meanwhile, Senator Dr Abdul Malik, senior leader of the National Party (NP) claimed during a press conference in Quetta on July 24 that about 4,000 Baloch youth, most of them political activists, are in the illegal custody of intelligence agencies and are being subjected to inhuman torture.

July 26

At least four persons sustain serious injuries when a bomb exploded near a sweetshop in Kohlu in the Balochistan province on July 25. The blast also destroyed three other shops.

July 27

Daily Times reports that unidentified gunmen shot dead Wing Commander (retd.) Mian Maqbool Ahmed Rehbar, the principal of the Mastung Cadet College at his official residence in Mastung on July 26.Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Bugti tribe told reporters via satellite phone from an undisclosed location in the Dera Bugti district on July 26 that five security personnel have been killed and 14 others injured in separate incidents of landmine blasts by tribal militants during the past four days.

Separately, three persons were injured when a tractor was blown up in a landmine explosion in the Tali Mat area of Dera Bugti. While, an exchange of fire was ensued between the tribal militants and the security forces (SF) personnel at an undisclosed location in the Dera Bugti district.

Unidentified gunmen fired at least 12 rockets at a Frontier Corps (FC) check post at Pattar Nalla in the Dera Bugti district on July 26. However, there were no casualties.

A top commander of Nawab Akbar Bugti’s militia, Ghulam Ali Bugti, has surrendered to the government at an unspecified place in the Dera Bugti district.

Daily Times reports that four officers of the Police Services Group who were recently transferred to Balochistan province have refused to take their new assignments due to the prevailing volatile law and order situation in the province.

Elsewhere, at least 32 Afghan nationals who had been arrested for illegally staying in the town of Chaman were handed over to the Afghan authorities at Bab-e-Dosti, the main border crossing between Afghanistan’s southern Kandahar province and Balochistan province on July 26.

July 29

Unidentified gunmen shot dead two civilians, Munir Ahmed and Zahoor Ahmed, at Wahdat Colony in Quetta on July 28. Separately, at least 21 people, including a woman and a child, were wounded in twin bomb explosions near the Chaman railway crossing in Quetta.Unidentified gunmen damaged a pipeline supplying gas from Kandh Kot to Gaddo Thermal Power Station in Kashmore.

July 31

Daily Times quoting official sources reports that three soldiers, Mohammad Taslim, Ali Mohammad and Wali Bakhsh, were killed and three others sustain serious injuries when their vehicle hit a landmine at Kahan in the Kohlu district on July 30.Separately, a rocket hit an under-construction hotel at Koh-i-Atil in Gwadar.

Meanwhile, three commanders, Sherbaz Khan Bugti, Sher Ali Bugti and Qalandar Khan Bugti, of tribal chief Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti surrendered to the government at an unspecified place on July 30 along with nine AK rifles, two rocket launchers and seven hand grenades.
