The word shortened = curtailed so to curtailed *days* seems to indicate time. Although none of the events Christ described as signs of His return are omitted there is the usage of the woman in travail - birth pangs. (There are several references Old and New regarding this analogy.)

To use labor as a symbolic of the *end* comes in three stages and that final one cannot be stopped without interference.

This being the case of birth pangs, no omission of events yet *days* being shortened I am inclined to believe the message is about time.

If I had to bet, I'd still bet that it means less number of hours per day instead of less number of days. Still seems to me that the latter would have meant he'd not have taken such great pains to spell out specificially a precise number of days as He did 2-3 different ways.
