Iraqi Hostage Recovered; Terrorist Cell Leader Captured

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Aug. 13, 2006 – U.S. soldiers in recent days have recovered an Iraqi hostage and captured a terrorist cell leader, officials said.
Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers from D Company, 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, captured the terrorist cell leader during an Aug. 10 cordon-and-search operation southwest of Baghdad.

The cell leader is directly linked to a July 17 attack on a local market in Mahmudiyah, which killed 40 Iraqis and wounded another 70 others.

“Our soldiers are simply awesome,” said Col. Todd Ebel, commander of 2nd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division. “This is the third top member of this violent and elusive terrorist cell we have detained in recent weeks.”

Also on Aug. 10, an Iraqi man being held hostage was freed after Task Force Band of Brothers soldiers found him blindfolded and bound in the back of a vehicle near Baqubah.

The rescue occurred after a 101st Combat Aviation Brigade helicopter that was patrolling the area spotted the vehicle. The pilot noticed a suspicious gathering of people around the vehicle and reported the sighting.

A ground patrol attached to the 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, was sent to the area to investigate and found the man who claimed to have been kidnapped in Baqubah on Aug. 2.

The soldiers treated the man for his injuries and provided him a cell phone to call his family before taking him to a nearby coalition base, military officials said.

This is the second hostage rescue by Iraqi and Task Force Band of Brothers soldiers in the past two weeks. On July 30, Iraqi and U.S. soldiers raiding a suspected terrorist weapons cache near Muqdadiyah freed another Iraqi man the day before he was to be “judged” and likely killed by his kidnappers, officials said.

Kidnapping, whether for ransom, terror or propaganda use, continues to be a key terrorist and criminal tactic throughout Iraq. Teamwork between coalition forces and increasingly capable Iraqi security forces, aided and abetted by local residents, is aimed at identifying and capturing these kidnappers, military officials said.

Tip lines have been established in the provincial joint communication centers in Iraq's northern provinces to allow residents to anonymously provide information about terrorist activity, officials said.

Terror police target 70 'plots'
Uk Telegraph ^ | Aug. 13, 2006 | John Steele, Toby Helm and David Derbyshire

Posted on 08/13/2006 10:11:25 PM PDT by FairOpinion

More than 70 anti-terrorist investigations involving over 100 suspected Islamic extremists are under way in Britain in an operation unmatched even at the height of the IRA's mainland campaign.

John Reid, the Home Secretary, confirmed yesterday that police and security services were aware of about 24 "major conspiracies".

They are believed to be "multi-handed" terrorist plots, such as the alleged plan to blow up transatlantic airliners that led to the arrest of 24 people last Thursday.

Sources say that, on top of the inquiries confirmed by Mr Reid, up to 50 more are being conducted by anti-terrorist police, most of them involving Scotland Yard and MI5.

A significant amount of the activity involves internet communication between groups, often young Muslim men at college or university.

The upcoming "Snakes on a Plane" movie had nothing on these highly toxic human beings who call themselves jihadis and who are every bit as lethal as the most poisonous serpent on the planet.

I've had it with these &%#@* jihadis on these &%#@* planes!

Does anyone know what time the flights were supposed to leave London on Wednesday? Just curious as to the approximate time the event might have taken place. If something else was supposed to go down that same day, it might be good to know an approximate time frame in case anyone wants to be extra vigilant and maybe even alter their regular commuting patterns.

LAX officials say suspicious item on jet contained no explosives

Associated Press

LOS ANGELES - Police safely evacuated an Alaska Airlines flight on Monday because no one claimed a "suspicious item" that was found on board, a Los Angeles International Airport spokesman said.

Bomb-sniffing dogs later determined the item did not contain explosives, airport spokesman Harold Johnson said.

A Los Angeles Police Department bomb squad and the FBI still planned to search the plane, officials said.

Airport police received notification at 8:20 a.m. that there was a suspicious item on board the Los Angeles-bound plane which originated in Guadalajara, Mexico, said airport spokeswoman Nancy Castles. She said she did not know what the item was.

Johnson said the crew became alarmed when no one claimed the item.

"The flight attendant discovered an item and she said, 'Is this yours?' And all the passengers said, 'No," Johnson said.

The plane landed without incident just before 9 a.m., Castles said, and all 125 passengers and crew were transported to the terminal in buses after it taxied to a remote area of the airport.

"Passengers have been disembarked and carry-ons in the cabin will be screened by canines," said Transportation Security Administration spokesman Nico Melendez.

Good question though!

What are the odds some guy from across the world in Afghanistan would be swimming across the Rio Grande? I have a funny mental picture of this (even though it's not funny).

Terrorists Directed To Destroy U.S. Corporate Jets

From airliners.net poster - NASCARAirforce

I was at the Oakland County Pontiac Airport (KPTK) today for their annual open house and fly in. I happened to catch a note on the bulletin board in the Executive Terminal/Airport Management office there. It was issued by the FAA to all Airport Managers and Aircraft owners. It said something like this:

There was a letter intercepted written in Arabic that was giving directions for Muslims to target all U.S. registered Corporate Jets and destroy them. It named Learjets and Gulfstreams Specifically. I think it was mainly more for these attacks to happen abroad however and not domestically. It mentioned the reason for going after corporate jets was because they carry important CEOs and U.S. Dignitaries, and recognizing these American jets by their N number. It then gave a list of things to look out for such as suspicious people taking pictures around the airport etc.

My first question is - how come this hasn't hit the media yet? You would think that the propaganda machine would have a field day blowing this out of proportion

Second question is - Are the cops and rent a cops going to go after people even more for writing down N numbers and taking pictures?
