Strange how we've paid so much attention to that race for the 3 previous primaries, but it's not even registering a blip on the radar screen this year for us, sadly.

QUESTION: Should public schools be allowed to teach intelligent design in science classes?

o Barnett: Yes. I believe all views should be taught, but these decisions should be made by local school boards without state mandates or restrictions.

o Jennison: Yes.

o Pickell: No. While I have a strong personal opinion concerning God's brilliant work, we should teach science in science classes and religion in a religion class.

o Canfield: [Declined to answer.]

o Crowell: Yes. Science classes should be permitted to acknowledge that some believe in an intelligent design theory. Personally, my God is great enough to intelligently design evolution.

Thanks for posting that. No, I can't support Barnett - he's undermining science in favor of his religious ideas, or else he's pandering, which is worse.

Governor / Lt. Governor (R)
Precincts Reporting: 948 of 3305 CANDIDATE VOTES %

R-Jim Barnett 17558 38 %

R-Ken R. Canfield 11940 26 %

R-Rex Crowell 2084 5 %

R-Dennis Hawver 2054 5 %

R-Robin Jennison 9579 21 %

R-Timothy V. Pickell 1585 4 %

R-Richard "Rode" Rodewald 913 2 %

Canfield and Jennison have climbed a little bit. If you look at the county map, you'll see that Sedwick County (Wichita), Leavenworth County (Lawrence), and Wynadotte County (Kansas City) are beginning to post returns.

You're in the 3rd District, right?

Who were you backing in the GOP primary for Congress?

That's one of several reasons I supported Canfield, but it looks as if Barnett's the one. I'm not in Kansas anyhow, so my opinion on that doesn't really matter.

It's important for conservatives to support whoever wins this primary, for reasons that I listed on post # 3.

"And look for Moore to challenge Roberts in 08."

Oh please, please, please, please! Roberts would beat him by 20% and the GOP would finally pick up Moore's House seat.

Barnett's OK with me, but I would've preferred Canfield. I mainly supported Canfield because of his fathers rights advocacy, in any event. I also think Canfield would be more likely to win the general election, but no matter who wins the primary it's gonna be a very uphill battle against Sebelius.

Pat Roberts might choose to retire in 2008, when he turns 72 y/o.

"Assuming Roberts runs again. He'll be 72."

Pat Roberts has spent his entire adult life in politics and patiently waited for his chance to run for the U.S. Senate in 1996. There's NO WAY he'll step down after just two terms in his dream job. 2014, maybe, but he might run for reelection then too.

Which is why Dennis Moore will not run for the Senate in 2008.

I've heard differently.

Snowbarger did nothing to distinguish himself in his one term in Congress, didn't come back to the district a lot and was a terrible fund-raiser.

You could lay some blame on moderate Republicans who were still disgruntled over over the 1996 primary between Snowbarger and Ed Eilert - but to lay the blame entirely on moderate Republicans is not true.

But if a Kansas City Democrat runs, the GOP candidate will clean up in Johnson County and win the election. Dennis Moore hasn't won 5 times by getting slammed in Johnson County; he's always gotten at least 45% of the vote there.

You're correct, of course, that including all of Wyandotte County and most of Douglas County in the district has kept Moore alive all these years. Your beloved RINOs proved once again how they're hell-bent on handing power over to the Democrats when they refused to adopt a redistricting plan that would lead to Moore's defeat and instead gave him a less Republican district than before. It would have been quite easy to draw 4 districts that each gave President Bush at least 57% in 2000 (he got 59% in the state as a whole), but Governor Graves and the rest of the RINOs were not interested.

A big factor in Snowbarger's defeat was the Clinton impeachment. There was a huge anti-conservative backlash among upscale white urban liberals in 1998.

All five Republican Congressmen defeated for reelection that year (Snowbarger, Rick White, Bill Redmond, Jon Fox, & Mike Pappas) represented districts with a significant number of such voters.

Go Merrick.

Lesson to Wagner, don't get your kid to make phone calls. Everyone expects your kid to support you. They don't want two phone calls saying not much more than, "Vote for my dad." I like kids and everything, but that's obnoxious.
