A Day in the Life of (a very healthy) President Bush - (photos) - 8.1.06

This morning President Bush traveled to the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland for his annual physical. He was declared in good health, but has gained a bit of weight (four pounds) which he attributed to 'too many birthday cakes.' Doctors put him in the superior category of fitness for men his age.

Some of the fun details.........(excerpted from Reuters......)

The nearly 6-foot Bush weighed in at 196 pounds, up from around 191.6 pounds last year.

A fitness enthusiast, Bush rides his mountain bike several times a week and also does elliptical training, free-weights, stretching and low-impact workouts on a treadmill.

Mountain biking became his favorite sport after he had to give up running three years ago because of knee problems.

Bush's body mass index is 26.6 under a formula used by the National Institutes of Health. A BMI of 25 or above is considered to be overweight though the index does not account for extra muscle mass.

"The president remains in excellent health and fit for duty. All data suggest that he will remain so for the duration of his presidency," a summary of the medical report said.

The president's resting heart rate was 46 beats per minute, well below the average of range of 60 to 85 and consistent with someone in very good physical shape.

His blood pressure was 108/68 and his cholesterol was 174, both normal levels. His cholesterol level was down from 178 last year.

Bush, who celebrated his birthday at a Fourth of July dinner at the White House, was given a total of seven cakes during the week he turned 60, according to White House spokesman Tony Snow.

Asked about Bush's weight gain, Snow said, "My guess is he's determined to lose it."

Last year's physical exam found that Bush had lost eight pounds (3.5 kg) after his weight had crept up to 199.6 pounds (90.5 kg) in December 2004, an increase he blamed on the presidential campaign that year. (end excerpt)

First Lady Laura and daughters Barbara and Jenna were spotted in Alaska at the Denali National Park and Preserve on vacation, and it was confirmed by the National Park Service there. (It's hard to hide when you're the wife of the President!)

Enjoy your trip to Sanity Island on the Daily Dose!!

I was for about 27 hours (I still don't quite understand the timeframe)....

Bizarre! Especially since you did nothing wrong. The crazies are out in force on FR these days, but good guys like you get suspended. Too strange for me.

Oh, and I do mean crazies. Some of these people are definitely a few bricks short of a load (and probably tossing back a few stiff ones as they type, too). One unbalanced dude has this thing about the number 537 because there are 435 members of the House, 100 senators, and the President and Vice President. And the number 537 is also the official count of votes in Flordia that provided the margin of victory for President Bush in 2000. And, according to this dude, 537 was the Supreme Court docket number for the famous 1896 Plessey vs Ferguson case, which led (in this dude's tortured reasoning) to the increase in murder rates in the U.S.

Go figure.

Agree, ohio. I was in Denali about 4 years ago, and for sure, it's not celebrity stuff. I stayed in one of the few fancy lodges that actually had indoor bathrooms. :-)

Actually, I think it might be easy to lose weight in the WH. I'm old enough to remember when Jackie Kennedy was there. She once said that she maintained her weight by having the chef give her a lobster tail, a few asparagus sprigs and one glass of wine for lunch.

Well, if I could have a lunch like that delivered every day, I'd have no problem losing weight. :-)

My wife and I met President Bush back in May of this year. It was a fund raising event for a local pol ... we had our picture taken with him. President Bush, at least in my estimation (I'm a former Marine who takes pride in staying in shape), appeared to have zero body fat, he looked to be in excellent condition ... in fact, I'm surprised his weight is in the 190 lbs. category ... I would estimate (at least then) that he was closer to 180.
On the down side ... he has an enormous amount of ear hair ... ;)
