Anybody have any pictures of that giant news crawl that was put into the windows of the embassy? I think it was the cuban embassy. That was hilarious and awesome. And too little reported...

According to Wikipedia:
"According to National Public Radio on August 1, 2006, Raúl Castro is thought to be more pragmatic than his older brother, and more willing to accept economic reform, raising hopes among many Cubans that he could ease Cuba's transition to a more open, democratic and market-oriented society."

Of course, they put this paragraph in after detailing how it was Raul in the 50's that was far more radical than Fidel, and how it was Raul's association with Che Guevara that finally got Fidel on-board with the revolution.

You know an "encyclopedia" entry is biased when they quote NPR for a message of hope in the transition of power in a communist dictatorship. This is all done so Americans keep quiet and don't incite riot in Cuba that could bring a true democratic reform. If we all believe that he really wants free markets and democracy, then we'll all take a "wait and see" attitude. By then, the opportunity for an overthrow will be lost.

It would be my guess that Cuba ain't seen nothing yet. Chavez to Raul: "you take the high road and I'll take the low road..."

So are you saying out of the frying pan, into the fire?

Yes and No.

Raul is worse then Fidel (Both have hinted at this over the years), but Raul ain't exactly young, and by all the looks of things, while Fidel and Raul have set up a succession plan, I don't think Raul has (or wants to, or even can).

It won't be after Fidel that Cuba has freedom, but after Raul.

Sidenote: Raul Castro is the one who actually introduced Che Guerraro to Fidel Castro, and Raul Castro was Che's mentor.

....and Che was considered pretty much to radical for even Fidel.

This is weird. I was at the dentist a few months ago, and a woman who came from Cuba came out of the office and started talking to me and my friend. She hates Castro, and said she would celebrate the day the man dies..It was just strange and now he's in the hospital. She also said she knew his brother would take over the country and she would celebrate his death too.

I had a friend whose family came from Cuba years ago.

According to what he heard, his family believed that Raul had personally been involved in torturing and probably executing several family members due to some kind of involvement in encouraging ball players to defect.

Raul has even less humanity then the monster Fidel, but on the upside, he is about 75, so he won't be long for this earth either.

I went to grade school with Cubans. They all hated Castro.I was 9 y/o at the time. I really never thought about his age cuz he's always been there. I guess I thought he would always be there. God Bless the citizens of Cuba. I hope they finally get a chance to experience freedom. I was picturing that lady from the dentists office. She is probably dancing as we speak. I wish I knew her personally, I would be dancing with her. LOL!

Castro hands power to his brother.

I didn't realize Fidel was a king.

I thought Jimmy Carter declared Castro had been elected fairly.

What gives, Jimmy?

Is Raul Castro the elected vice president of Cuba?

Too funny. And great photo (dead).

They will probably end up stuffing him and parading him around Havana for a week or two. Then build some edifice for all to see his moulding carcass.

PS. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. He has a lot to answer for.

Stalin's death probably wasn't natural and there is credidble information that he was clubbed and/or poisoned. Mao had ALS, but some of his comrades accused Mao's wife of murdering him.

CNN Breaking: "The Venezuelan government cites Cuban authorities as saying Cuban President Fidel Castro's recuperation "is advancing positively."

In the wrong direction...doh!

Stalin's death probably wasn't natural

The story is Beria poisoned him, after learning that Stalin was about to purge the Politburo.

Yeah, my theory is that ever since cigars got popular, Fidel has been holding back the good tobacco and exporting the Grade B trash - which is still as good as any Honduran or Dominican stogie. I've also heard from a FReeper in South America, that the quality control of Cubans are awful. Except for one obscure brand.

That's about to change for the better.

TEXT OF MESSAGE:

"Because of the enormous effort involved in visiting the Argentine city to attend the Mercosur meeting, at the closing of the Summit of the Peoples in the historic University of Cordoba and the visit to Alta Gracia, the city where Che (Guevara) lived in his childhood and immediately afterward attending the commemoration of the 53rd anniversary of the attack on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Cespedes barracks, the 26th of July of 1953, in the provinces of Granma and Holguin, days and nights of continuous work with hardly any sleep, have caused my health, which has withstood all tests, to fall victim to extreme stress and to be ruined.

This has caused in me an acute intestinal crisis with sustained bleeding that has obliged me to undergo a complicated surgical operation. All the details of this health accident can be seen in X- rays, endoscopies and filmed material. The operation will force me to take several weeks of rest, away from my responsibilities and duties.

As our country is threatened in circumstances like this by the government of the United States, I have made the following decision:

I am flying to Miami to receive the best medical care provided. I was told that this would be an outpatient surgery so I thought me and some of the old crew would get together over some stogies and talk about the good ol days in the 50s. Sorta a time to heal some old wounds with an old soldier. I may bring Elian to do some juggling. That kid is hilarious.
