MEVER FORGET
MEL's current long day's journey into night is all about his longtime ambivalence about WAR and its ability to bring about change, ...sometimes for the better.
After the Attacks of 9/11 President BUSH promised to bring Freedom to the entire Middle East ...as America's own best self protection against future terrorist attacks here at home ..one way or another.
What MEL has been witnessing these last 3 weeks on TV, along with the rest of us, is a Free Isreal actually fighting to make things better for itself ..thru WAR. In the process this WAR has more clearly defined for all to see how Anti-Freedom terrorists in Lebanon are supplied and backed by Freedom's enemies ..Syria and Iran. And they are next in line to be held accountable ..thru WAR, if necessary, by the Forces of Freedom. Because Free People are not inclined to attack other people, bottom line.
In his youth young American MEL was taken to Australia to be raised by his Anti-Vietnam War father who wanted to avoid the Vietnam War draft in the United States for his sons.
Later a mature MEL went on to portray my victorious in WAR Vietnam Commanding Officer Lt. Col. HAL G. MOORE in "WE WERE SOLDIERS."

I was a Radioman/Driver/Orderly for Lt. Col. MOORE in Vietnam. "WE WERE SOLDIERS" is about our Battle in the Valley of Death known as the IA DRANG Valley of November 1965, the WAR's 1st major battle between American Forces and Communist North Vietnamese Army Regulars.

In his promotional Network TV Interviews before "WE WERE SOLDIERS" was released in theaters MEL was ambivalent about WAR in general, while being very supportive of now retired Lt. Gen. HAL G. MOORE's battle role in Vietnam. An undercurrent WAR ambivalence you could slightly sense on TV that was not seen in his movie screen portrayal.
Our 1965 IA DRANG Valley Battle, again the Vietnam War's 1st Major Battle, was a defining moment in my life. It taught me first hand that there really is such a thing as hate in this world and people who hate the Free for being Free. It also taught me that there are winners and losers in WAR. As in ..our communist enemy was out to flatten us in that valley long ago, but was stopped instead by our skillfully fighting for ourselves under the expert direction of Lt. Col. HAL G. MOORE.

All this helped me realize immediately on the morning of Septmenber 11, 2001 that if our new terrorist enemies in this new century had had nuclear weapons at their disposal on 9/11 ...all of New York City would have been flattened that infamous day ...instead of its World Trade Center.
MEL now sees BUSH backing WAR in the Middle East as only the President's perceived correct instrument of change for the better there ...and MEL deeply resents what he sees.
I sense MEL's current outbursts, fueled by alcohol as they were last Friday morning, are reflective of his own feelings of impotence in being able to have any affect on this current world situation. Outbusts that are thus fueled by his resulting rage at the one man he cannot control, affect or change in all this ...President BUSH.
MEL's warm loving heart shows through magnificiently in "WE WERE SOLDIERS" & his "PASSION of the CHRIST" Motion Pictures. The latter being sparked by the sacrificies depicted the former.

But...
...Victory in WAR comes only from CLARITY and unswerving committment.
...Defeat in WAR comes from their absence.
I know, 'cause I've been there.
And the Free always seem to have a LOT more to lose..?

Bump!
Thank you for an excellent post, Aloha Ronnie!
God Bless You!
Thanks Aloha Ronnie, for your thoughts. I was explaining to a friend the other day who you are -- I sent her to your website and told her "He's the real deal!" Thank you for everything you have done for our country. And that goes for all you Vietnam vets -- welcome home. There are plenty of us here who love you!

NEVER FORGETIt taught me first hand that there really is such a thing as hate in this world and people who hate the Free for being Free.
Therein lies the folly of appeasing the enemy, "tolerating," or making excuses for their intolerant ideology and way of life - something the hug-a-terrorist-crowd still don't seem to understand.
