To: Vision

The problem is that booze tends to bring out one's true nature. The guy's id, his instinctual reflective beliefs and attitude, is a not a pretty picture, and to leash it, the guy needs to take up jogging or something in lieu of booze. That is my best advice.

I don't know about one's "true nature", but we all have our dark side, (demons to fight), whether we admit ir or not. Alcohol, as you say, tends to release that dark side in some cases. You offer good advice, but prayers are needed for any alcoholic, and especially for their families.
