Mel Gibson apologizes for DUI arrest

LOS ANGELES - Mel Gibson issued a lengthy statement Saturday apologizing for his drunk driving arrest and saying he has battled alcoholism throughout his life.

Gibson also apologized for what he said were "despicable" statements he made to the deputies who arrested him early Friday morning on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu.

"I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested," he said in a statement issued by his publicist. "I disgraced myself and my family with my behavior and for that I am truly sorry. I have battled with the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse."

Publicist Alan Nierob declined to elaborate beyond the statement.

Gibson, 50, was arrested for investigation of driving under the influence of alcohol after deputies stopped his 2006 Lexus LS 430 for speeding. Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said deputies clocked him doing 87 mph in a 45 mph zone.

A breath test indicated Gibson's blood-alcohol level was 0.12 percent, Whitmore said. The legal limit in California is 0.08 percent.

The actor was released early Friday after posting $5,000 bail.

The haters and crazies are always here, just waiting for an opportunity to spew their sickenss.

Yes, but there's really not many of them, maybe a hard core group of about ten or twelve. Most of them have been here, working the threads as a pack, for about eight years.

How well I remember when 'certain' posters appeared on FR. Right about the time I exited FR for about a year.

JR did a very good job of cleaning out the manure but a few remained like the plague, lying in wait to post again.

Mel must not be a very good drinker. .012? Usually you don't see hear the religion/race attacks come out of drunks until they near .20

I admire him for having the guts to come out and apologize,

His alcohol level was probably the equivalent of three beers in an hour at most.

His problems run a lot deeper than alcohol. His publicist's explanation was a "limited hang-out", a partial explanation that explains nothing and omits the really embarassing stuff.

It's a little apalling that you have no problem with Mel's remarks.

You may be right in saying that he'll reap what he sows.

Thanks Aloha Ronnie, for your thoughts. I was explaining to a friend the other day who you are -- I sent her to your website and told her "He's the real deal!" Thank you for everything you have done for our country. And that goes for all you Vietnam vets -- welcome home. There are plenty of us here who love you!

Ms.B - ping to #198.

Words don't equal actions. That's the axle being wrapped around. Mel Gibson said some ugly things. To my knowledge he's not funding Hezbollah. To my knowledge he's not funding anti-Jewish organizations.

If Mel Gibson's words are to be taken in such a dire vein, then all feminists should be arrested as "haters" for 30+ years of propogandistic male bashing. Even worse? They got their anti-male hate codified into LAWS against men.

I don't see Mel doing that.

So, yes, I do agree with your post.

OTOH, the politicians, Democrats always, make anti-semitic statements. They, however, are in positions of PUBLIC TRUST, ergo, their anti-semitism IS a problem. If Mel is to be "hung" for his anti-semitic drunk statements, then MOVE-ON ORG should be charged with "verbal" encouragement of trying to kill not only our President, but the rest of us. Every protestors shouting "out of Iraq now" should be charged with hating you and me.

This is all so wrong. Mixing apples and oranges.

Democrats HATE Israel. They've worked hard throughout the entire reign of Clinton to make Israel as vulnerable as possible WHILE the same administration worked hard to embolden and empower Israel's enemies.

Here's my theory about Mel's ramblings while drunk.

Premise: Hollywood being run by liberal Jews. The slamming and non-stop bashing Mel got for his movie. How Hollywood does a two-step preference thing for those actors it "approves" PC-style. Liberal Jews, ime, don't really give a damned what happens to Israel. What they do care about is 3/4ths of what most of us are fighting against -- the usurpation of our homes and our country; "The Global Church".

So when I read about Mel's comments, my gut reaction ? He's seen into a larger world through the making of his film. And he's furious at those in Hollywood (and yes, we can add Spielberg) who are acting as the Sanhedrin did in Christ's time.

Jesus was a Jew.

NEVER FORGET

It taught me first hand that there really is such a thing as hate in this world and people who hate the Free for being Free.

Therein lies the folly of appeasing the enemy, "tolerating," or making excuses for their intolerant ideology and way of life - something the hug-a-terrorist-crowd still don't seem to understand.

To my knowledge, Alcohol addiction was never characterized as a disease by medical science, but only by the founders of AA some 70 years ago. They did this to describe what they felt was hopeless condition in which the sufferers only worsened over time. Even in the "Big Book" of AA, alcoholism is never referred to as a disease, but rather a spiritual malady. I think it does a disservice to label those who are addicted to alcohol as having an incurrable disease.

That is my understanding as well though I do remember reading something a few years back about a genetic condition that affects ones ability to break down alcohol in a normal fashion. I don't really recall the details or if it was more than just a theory.

I cannot believe some of the posts here.

Boo hoo poor Mel. The "Hollywood elite" didn't swallow his film whole, and "they" are out to get him, hence his tirade.

You don't wake up one day "frustrated" by the world, wanting to "fix" it, and suddenly become in the process a raving Jewhater.

It's very clear that he adopted his father's views, probably has since his boyhood. He didn't make a film that was rejected by "the elites", and therefore adopt anti-semitic attitudes, he made an anti-semitic film and now confirms, in his drunken stupor, that his attitude toward Jews animates his version of Christianity.

He not alone in his Jewhatred, btw. Tony Kushner, who wrote "Munich" is a Jewish Mel Gibson as far as I am concerned. So we're getting it from all sides these days.

It never stops, merely ebbs and flows, is more or less visible.

He'll probably grow a longer beard, retreat to his Malibu compound, convince himself that he is a Christ-like figure, and "is being crucified by the evil Jews", and live out his days as a Howard Hughes-like recluse.

Sad really. But he brought it on himself.

Yep. And btw, his other comments were odious too. He "owns" Malibu and would make the arresting officer "pay." Calling a female officer "sugar *its." If Ted Kennedy behaved this way, he'd be universally excoriated on this site.

Yes we would. The press is too pervasive these days for anyone in the public eye to get away with behavior like this.

The report says Gibson then launched into a barrage of anti-Semitic statements: "F*****g Jews... The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world." Gibson then asked the deputy, "Are you a Jew?"

How do we know the transcription is accurate ?

What if it was more like this ?

"F*****g Juice... The Juice are responsible for all the wars in the world."
