Explanation (4): She bought it herself, since she spends whatever money she gets on things she wants, expecting taxpayers to take care of the things she needs.

She should sell the car and use the money to get herself out of her situation. Sheesh!

She "SHOULD" but she WON'T and she will probably SUE and WIN, setting a precedent that eventually will lead to any property/money etc, won or inherited being exempt from determining eligibility for family assistance.

"I got everything cut off in Louisiana and when I came down here, I applied for food stamps, I applied for Medicaid, and I transferred my housing."

See . . . she IS self-reliant.

Just like those Oprah studio fans found when she 'gave' them all new cars a year ago.

Since you brought that up, what about those people on that show Extreme Makeover -- how do they pay their taxes, property and gift?

And how to their neighbors feel when THEIR property taxes go up because of the new values in the neighborhood?

"Honestly, do you know just how good some of these ramen noodles are when you add a little meat and fresh herbs?"

Love these noodles! They can be the basis of a darn good soup or stew. Not just Spam but imitation crab added to shrimp or oriental flavored noodles.

Stephanie Drinkard is a single stay-at-home mom with two little girls

If I was her I would immediately sell it, pay the tax, tithe on the earnings, buy an economical car and thank God for the blessings.

My first home had section 8 on either side.

I lived in an apartment complex across from Section 8 housing square in the middle of downtown Denver. It was a lovely experience. Police sirens day and night. Drunks passed out on park benches before noon. Armed security at the local supermarket.

But the one thing I miss the most were the gangs of pre-teen thugs who roamed the streets at 3 in the morning vandalizing and tagging everything in their path and generally menacing anyone who had the misfortune to be out that late. During the day they were shoplifting so much merchandise from the corner market that the Asian owners closed the place down and moved.

Nice to meet another Wilmingtonian online. Yes, we also have a lot of Mexican's here too but the ones I know and live around spend most of their days in the fields or along the roadside doing work others wouldn't touch but they have the nicest yard and the most well behaved children. On July 4th they really put on a nice fireworks show for the rest of the neighborhood. Just shows hard work pays off
Hope Single mom catches on soon or the kids will probably grow up the same way...What a shame

No guarantees, there, either.

I knew a young woman who went through a bad divorce, had her kids and a car which, if in good shape would have booked too high for her to receive assistance.

The car was a shambles, though, and had been bought way below theoretical book.

That did not stop the fine civil servants from cataloging the 'asset' as being worth multiples of its real market value, which due to pervasive minor body damage was no more than $300-500, max.

She was denied assistance because the car booked for too much, even though the case worker refused to even look at the car.

She managed to work her way through school, has a good job now, and a real attitude toward anything that puts 'LSW' after its name.

Whadda ya want to bet the two girls don't have the same daddy??

They might, but it would take a dna test to find out. The mama surely doesn't have a clue. You probably have to test the entire male population {or at least the duke lacrosse team} to find the answer.

You can't make people make good choices

I read a great quote. Can't remember who said it. "If all the rich people gave all their money to all the poor people, in five years the rich people would be rich again and the poor people would be poor again."

But....but....just because you did it is not any reason to expect a welfare queen to get off her butt and try to make ends meet! What do you expect? She's from Louisiana, after all!

(ahem) Because it's so unfair.

My car is 18 years old, has 186K plus miles. No ac/no heat but gets me to the grocery store, doctor's appointments, and church. Runs pretty darn good too for such a "beater".
