They would not be liable for reporting "TMZ is saying this."
All of the other news outlets reported what Dan Rather and CBS were saying about the President's National Guard Service and yet only CBS took the heat for it.

I think just maybe he has a drinking problem. If so, I hope he seeks help.As do I. You know what they say about alcohol...it's a great uninhibiter.(sp?) You say things you want to say but can't when your sober.

You may be right. It may still be a bit early to claim the case is closed.
To: Texas Mom
His blood alcohol level wasn't THAT high! Read the whole thread, before you post.

I just remembered that he owns Icon Entertainment International.
Mel Gibson has a movie studio with equipment that can travel to and shoot in anyplace in the world. That's practically like having a private army.
Icon pictures makes hit after hit after hit.
Mel Gibson has got to be a billionaire. They can't crush him.
To: The Red Zone
Yes, corroboration. Thanks for catching my screw-up.
Mel's been acting a bit on the wacky side lately, but just a bit. I'll wait until legitimate sources come forward before passing judgement.
It would be nice though if he would admit to being wrong on his quips asking 'Where are the WMDs?' We've found plenty, Mel - over 500 by recently unclassified reports......

Yep if this really isn't true then this is probably the worst case of defamation I have ever witnessed.

Or, you could say things you believed at an earlier time but do not believe now (when sober). But you said them nonetheless. Hard to unsay something.

People will always wonder what your real attitude is after a boozed outburst like that.
To: Texasforever
That really IS a problem, for some; they believe that an actor or actress is the character/s they play. They aren't and a lot of them can't string four coherent words together, unless someone else writes it down for them to memorize.
This is nothing new; the old studio system had handlers for their top money makers and NEVER allowed them to "be themselves", in public.

His blood alcohol level wasn't THAT high! Read the whole thread, before you post. Excuse me? I did read the whole post.
No matter what his blood level was, he was drunk, speeding and belligerent. His blood level was above the legal limits.

If all they say is 'TMZ is reporting a story', then they can slime (if this isn't true) Gibson all day long with no risk to themselves.
It's a noted ploy of the unscrupulous.
