Whoa, whoa, whoa - having been in the operator's position, she's not being stupid, she's maintaining communication with the caller. Would you rather she be discussing the weather with him or how lovely and cool it is in her office? Or should she let him know just how frustrated she is that she can't do a damned thing from where she's sitting? Maybe she should have just told him "we have your location, assistance is on the way," and released the lines so other people could call in. Or she could have said "Kev, buddy old pal, you're well and truly facked, are there any last words you'd like us to pass on for you?" Or maybe she just should have sat there silently, listening to him die.
I had the same thoughts as you. And as I was listening to the operator, I think she KNEW there was not much she could do for him, but stay with him on the line. How helpless she must have felt.
