I believe that there were a lot of honest-hearted ordinary Southern men who died for that. But I think that the underlying cause of the rebellion was the material selfishness of a relatively small group of slaveowners who manipulated events. And when events got hard for the Confederacy, the relatively quick collapse of the CSA showed that the rebellion never really had that much public support anyhow.
I'm not so sure I that I totally agree with this statement as it applies to the Civil War, but I would contend that the problems with the flag today are due to a relatively small group of individuals who want to manipulate events.
Or, perhaps it showed that most Southerners are more law-abiding than history books typically let on?
We're the original law-abiding side of the country... remember? While Boston was chucking tea into Boston Harbor, most of us down here wanted everyone to be cautious, and not to break the law too blatantly... (Of course, when the British came back with mortal force in retaliation for commercial crimes, we quickly joined the fight against what was genuinely tyrannical...)
Regards, and sorry for being so late to get to this thread :)

When you get tired of thinking, maybe you should consider learning some history.
"And when events got hard for the Confederacy, the relatively quick collapse of the CSA showed that the rebellion never really had that much public support anyhow".
LOL! That's one of the most blatantly ignorant things I've ever seen posted on FR and I've seen some doozies.
The Confederate flag is beautiful and a part of the history of the South. The whole flap is nonsensical! Slaves were first brought to the north, where folks tried to use them for labor but, since they came from Africa, they could not survive the cold winters. Let's do some research and find who those slave owners were. Then we can remove the American flags from our northern states.
Sometimes I think there's a lot of envy of southerners. Maybe that's why we keep being invaded by people who formerly lived in the north.
You realize, of course, that it was the northern textile factory owners who really stood to gain.
You also realize, of course, that there were both black and white slave owners.
