Well, it'll free up some troops...and Israel's presence in occupied lands is a recognized thorn in the sides of the whole region. It taints everything.

It changes nothing, but once out, Israel can claim high ground when attacks continue, and at least at the state level, opportunity costs will tend to dry up radical funding.

I had a discussion with a FReeper about this yesterday- it's appalling, isn't it?

Explain it? No. I cannot. It is utter madness to my way of thinking...but then- I'm not living in Israel..nor do I have a firm grasp of Israeli politics.

It SEEMS...the libs (in Israel) are content to keep giving away land to stop the madness. I would think they'd see where this will end..but who knows?? I would like to know Bibi's thoughts on this...LOL;)

Re withdrawal on the West Bank: I don't understand it either, except that very few politicians are able to discard their pet ideas ever.

However, I wonder if Olmert and Kadima aren't getting into hot water over this. Here is an item from Arutz Sheva.com:

Haifa Victim to Gush Katif Residents: 'I Am Sorry'
00:38 Jul 26, '06 / 1 Av 5766

(IsraelNN.com) A Haifa resident under siege by Hizbullah attacks and who ignored opponents to the government's expulsion of Gush Katif resident has written the expulsion victims and asked for forgiveness.

In an open letter posted on a Gush Katif forum web site, Y. S. wrote, "I closed my business since the beginning of the battle and I don't know what will happen. I never thought that I, a Haifa resident for 30 years, would be a refugee in my own land.

"During five years you coped with bombs, and I didn't care. Even when you came to visit me in my house, to explain, to convince, to share your feelings with me, I refused to listen to you.

"People from Gush Katif and the Shomron! Forgive me! Forgive us for not understanding you. I am not a religious man, and not a mystic person." The Haifa resident concluded that his problems are "the price that I am paying now for my late understanding."

(Gush Karif was one of the Israeli townsips in Gaza.)

I wonder how many more are starting to feel like Y.S?
