Kidnappings have occurred at Wal-Mart, muggings have occurred at Wal-Mart. It is not OK to leave a child unattended just because this is the USA.
A three-year-old needs to be watched at Wal-Mart or any other public place - for many reasons!
True. But walking with your child 5 feet away is far from leaving the child unattended.

But it should be. I was allowed to be on my own lots of time (from about 4 on), because I was well behaved, and could be trusted to come back.
Kidnapping was a worry for people with money then.
Add to that list:
Knife attacks by estranged spouses that was stopped by a gun carrying customer.
Suicide (in my local WalMart). A customer walked up to a greeter, said hi, pulled a gun and shot himself. He didn't even know her.
For those who think that 5 five is close enough to reach, I guess they've never seen a 3 year old take off running when you call them. That 5 feet can quickly be ten feet and out of sight.
