Lady, my kids are alive and healthy and that's because of ME. And I assure you, they won't be suffering from seperation anxiety because they've been tied to my apron strings for 20 years. I mean, if you're STILL grabbing for your 21 y/o childs hand....you either didn't raise her right or you're a smothering, obsessive control freak.

my bet is, the boy was playing ON the mirror.

In the late 1990s a TV fell from a top shelf and killed a child in a Walmart in Virginia. Was that child On the TV? No!!!

It was stupid of Walmart to put a floor mirror near a toy department. Anyone should have better sense than that. Even if the store didn't care about the safety of children, they should have been proactive to protect themselves against lawsuits.

I agree with you it is not a WalMart thread..........it started out that way, because we know WM is oging to be blamed for this, but quickly devolved into something I'm now sorry I continued.

I didn't see anything about a toy department.

I just replied ...

Yes, I know.......unless WM is found liable in this case, I doubt we'll ever know whole story about this tragic case.

However, my last two kids were only 22 months apart & I well remember the "job" of shopping with them by myself @ ages 3 & 5....;o)

No way I would ever let any of my 3 yr. olds out of the cart in any store, & surely not in these 'super' stores we have now.

The "children's department" is different than the toy department.

Well I still don't see with the info there how anyone could "blame" either the store or the mom...

As many have said - accidents happen....

As to why he wasn't in a cart.. hard to say... it's been so many years since my youngest was 3 ... I think I must have blocked out all shopping experiences from that time frame.. laugh...

I would love to say ... I ALWAYS had him in the seat in the cart - but I certainly wouldn't swear to it.. he was a handful and a 1/2 - I DO remember going shopping after 12m on my way home from work ... just so I didn't have to have him with me... laugh....

And you aren't judgemental?

I held my Moms hand after I was married and had kids. What's your problem?

see the update in 615, apparently this child did try to climb/step up on the mirror, & it wasn't in the toy department.

........even good kids can get out of hand at times and do something mom or dad can't catch in time.

You're right. Also, this poor mother is probably going to be blaming herself for the rest of her life. No amount of money from Walmart or any kind of settlement is going to help that.

Worse yet, some of the comments on this post distinctly lack compassion or sympathy. No wonder Republicans/conservatives have the bad reputation for looking down their noses at people and having the nerve to insinuate they deserve all the bad that happens to them under the self-righteous banner of "accountability." A little boy is dead and it's all the mother's fault? For shame.

I also stated to you that neither my mother or grandmother allowed her children to sit unattended while in the dressing room.....your mother did.

As did other Freepers mothers. It seems it wasn't unusual.

I'm just pointing out your own inconsistencies.

As viewed through your own biased opinion. You don't like my opinion so you see thins differently. Fine. Why make it personal? And it has become so. VERY much so.

Even the most well behaved child is going to have his or her moments where every expectation of the parent is going to be totally wiped out, even at 3 years old.

My boys were hell on wheels but NOT in a store. THey knew better.

Why you refuse to give this mother any benefit of any doubt is positively beyond me.........even after the new information has been provided, I'm still willing to give her that.

Letting a 3 yr old out of your sight to rely on their own judgement is not a safe thing to do and this is a tragic illustration. Again, why wasn't he in a cart? Why didn't she hold his hand?

Thanks for that..The Mirror looks like it's been bonded to 1 & 1/4 door stock. Take a close look at the three panels of mirror in the clip. Notice the floor levelers are quite extended. If this thing was actually level when it was standing, the floor must have been of cobblestone! Now look at the so called rubber bumper...that's not a step...just a rather thin bumper, probably there to prevent damage from a floor buffer. I'm going to make an educated guess, either that Tri Fold was never anchored to the wall to begin with or if it was anchored, they are going to find the shield and screw used was totally inadequate for that amount of weight. If I'm right about this, I'm guessing the extended levelers made an already unstable design, not properly secured to a stud...lethal.

LOL, same here....my 'youngest' fixin to be 20, however, left unsupervised, @ 3 she might have opened & sampled much more food than I could have paid for.....;o)

I DO remember going shopping after 12m on my way home from work ... just so I didn't have to have him with me... laugh....

Yep, I was one of those late night (peaceful) shoppers too, back then.

Well I still don't see with the info there how anyone could "blame" either the store or the mom...

I'm not trying to lay blame, but I do know that I see many more unsupervised young children running around stores the last few years.

It's very easy to have a child within clear view of you from five feet away. Would the child be alive if the mother had been within four feet or maybe three feet of where the mirror fell? How about two feet away?
You seem to be the responsibility czar for FR and anyone who posts here. What are your qualification for the position? Were you blessed from on high to fill the spot?
People do make mistakes but being five feet away from a child isn't one you get to grind you heel into someone over.

A three year old really shouldn't be wandering around Wal-Mart. It's like Simba in a stampede...

...A Mexican stampede.

RE: Post #615

My first post on this thread: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1671216/posts?page=245#245

It looks more and more like wal mart will be paying out on this one (My opinion) even though the child was doing some thing both he and his mom should have known was not smart.

(some would say Darwin awardable, is awardable a word?)

Why was there a mirror that was heavy enough that two people were needed to lift it off of a three year old set up in such an unstable manner that a three year old could (when admittedly it's not a wise thing to do and contributory negligence to allow) playing on it?

Back yard on a swing is DEFINITELY different than being in a crowed store where people know bad things happen. i.e. kidnapping. Goes on all the time.

I have every qualification as a parent. I through experience know things happen but you do your best to control them. There is NO WAY a three year old kid should be running around, walking around or five feet from his mother....Period. That is what carts are for and if the kid was too fat for the seated part than the huge buggy would have worked just fine.
