INDIANAPOLIS -- A 3-year-old boy was fatally injured when a floor-mounted mirror fell on him at an Indianapolis Wal-Mart.
Police said Christopher Antonio was apparently playing near the 5-foot-tall mirror in the children's section of the store Saturday evening when it fell at the store in the 3200 block of 86th Street.
The boy was with his 5-year-old sister and his mother. The mother told police she was about 5 feet away from her son when she heard a loud crash.
Police said it took two people to pull the mirror off the boy.
Of course not, they were perfect.
No, kids would surely pop the bubblewrap before you got them out the door. ;-)
But seriously, it's only unnecessary if you have complete control over all situations, including the strangers that might come up to your children when your not looking or the things they'll wait to grab at till your back is turned.

It seems the child had stepped on the mirror. Doesn't sound as though the mirror was attached real well.
Certainly the mother should have noticed if the child were repeatedly trying to climb up on the mirror. What a terrible shame.
My littlest was in the cart. The boys walked beside it and had a hold of it. We talked. About everything under the sun. We laughed. We made fun of ridiculous items, style, color etc. They were never bored. They had my attention and knew it. Shopping was always secondary. They even helped shop and pointed out things as we walked the aisles.
You're kid could've been hanging off your jeans in a store and a cart could have mowed him down, he could have fallen backwards, hit his head and died - does that mean your responsible? I mean, after all, he could have been in your arms while you shopped (/sarc). Tragedies like these happen everyday and they are NOT ALWAYS a parents fault. I swear such a display of superiority I haven't seen in a long time.
Now, how safe is that?

How is it not? If the kid is sitting in the basket, playing with whatever toy you gave them, how is that not safe? If you're suggesting the kid would stand, is that before or after you told them to sit in the basket? If it's after, that's disobedience & that would need to be addressed.

You think that behavior is necessary. That is an opinion. I would agree that it is necessary if I were with a child who tried to run away, wander off, hide or climb on things. I have been out shopping with such children and trying to load the groceries on the conveyor belt is a nightmare!
In general though, I did not find that necessary.

Funny, I did that too, except my children were perfectly capable of walking next to the cart, or slightly ahead of it. They were fine.
My youngest is 8 and loves to walk to the next aisle and shop for what is needed there. I guess someone could kidnap him. But I like to encourage his independence.
BTW, I think that article puts more blame on WalMart.

How long does it take for a child to step on a mirror? 2 seconds? Maybe the mom looked away for 5 WHOLE seconds and completely missed it. She should be hung.
