It both shows typical arrogance and, at the same time, shows contempt for the audiecne, assuming that we won't understand if they don't spell it out.
By the way, have either of you heard Robin Williams bit about the invention of golf? Lots of swear words and one of the most bizarre "Scottish" accent, but also one of the funniest things I've ever seen him do. He would have been right at home at one of the old "smokers" with that routine. I can imagine folks like Buddy Hackett and Redd Foxx laughing their... ahem... heads off. It was the kind of stuff they did behind closed doors in their hey days.
