Part 5 of the landmark 1980 PBS series by Professor Friedman.

This one also features a very young Prof. Thomas Sowell.

Please discuss.

Friedman: I see no justification whatsoever for cutting down all the tall trees in order that there be no tree in the forest that is taller than the other.

Preach it, Brother Friedman!

Thomas Sowell gets a bit testy in this one. I like it:

SOWELL: You expressed it, dammit, look.

PIVEN: They expressed __

SOWELL: No, they did not. They did not.

(Applause)

SOWELL: Dammit.

PIVEN: They expressed that.

One of the thing that struck me most in this episode was Lance Von Allmen. After the episode I tried to look him up and look what I found:

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/SSDI/individual_record.asp?recid=296348231&lds=3&region=-1&regionfriendly=&frompage=99

The name is the same, and the bank from which he was leaving in the episode was in Nevada (i.e. Navada National Bank, Main Office, Las Vegas). And the death date is shortly after the episodes were taken. I wonder whether this is the same person and what the cause of his death was.

I can’t set aside my suspicion that it had something to do with his (possible) failure to become a millionaire: and if so, then it also (ironically) shows the dangers of the radical free market that Milton purports.
