The Minuteman Civil Defense Corps calls itself a "project of the Declaration Alliance," although few MCDC volunteers know what the alliance does or why Minuteman donations are routed through the charity founded and headed by conservative activist Alan Keyes.
Several Minuteman leaders and members questioned the wisdom of ceding control over fundraising to the Herndon-based Declaration Alliance, part of an intricate weave of conservative organizations founded and chaired by Mr. Keyes or tied to longtime Keyes associates working with MCDC.
MCDC President Chris Simcox told The Washington Times that the alliance offers "an experienced organization for mass mailings, advertising and public relations" and the ability to conduct a "fully accredited and independent audit" of MCDC finances.
Mr. Simcox said he "checked these people out very carefully before agreeing to work with them" and that he made the "correct decision" in hiring "clean professional consultants, accountants and media professionals." He did not, however, disclose during an interview last week or in a 3,961-word follow-up statement how much Declaration Alliance and its affiliated organizations have been paid for their services
During the interview, he said, "Not one cent of MCDC money has been spent on alliance projects." The statement, released on the MCDC Web page, www.minutemanhq.com/hq/, does not mention Declaration Alliance or Mr. Keyes. ...."

Hair, a former Paramount Studios publicist who served as press secretary for Republican Alan Keyes in his 2000 campaign for the presidency and his unsuccessful run last year for the U.S. Senate, calls herself a "Type A personality" who loves working for various causes she believes in. advertisement
She became the Arizona Republican's communications director in mid-May, earning $2,500 a month (the equivalent of $30,000 a year).
She works two days a week at his Washington office writing speeches, drafting talking points and doing research on various issues.
"She's turned out to be a bargain," Franks said.
But last week, Hair was busy working in Texas with Minuteman co-organizer Chris Simcox as he promoted his civilian border patrol movement. That included Simcox getting face time on the Fox News Channel with talk-show host Sean Hannity. Hair helped book the appearance.
"I've known Sean Hannity for about seven years," she explained.
During the trip, newspapers described Hair as "the media consultant" to the group. That included her telling the Odessa American about various communities forming branches to the Arizona Minuteman Project.
"In October, we start nationwide, in eight states on the Northern border and four on the Southern," she said.
Thus far, Hair and Simcox say, she has not been paid for her Minuteman work, which she began in mid-April. Neither ruled out her being paid in the future.
Paid consultant
Hair said she is paid for her consultant work in behalf of the Fisher Center and the Washington-based Coalition for a Fair Judiciary, a group that bills itself as "the only grass-roots organization that stands in the gap between the judicial nominees and the vicious onslaught of the left." She would not say how much.
Neither Franks, who sits on the House Judiciary Committee, nor Hair said they see any conflicts or potential confusion in her various roles, which do not violate House rules. Its Committee on Standards of Official Conduct holds that "outside employment is generally permissible provided that there are no conflict-of-interest concerns and the employing member (congressman) does not object."
There are some outside earned-income limits for "senior employees," whose pay is defined as the equivalent of at least $107,550 a year. But Hair does not meet that definition.

Actually my interest in Hair is beyond this whole scope of what we are discussing. I swear that I ran into her a couple of times during college and I can't remember where or why. The name sounds familar to me like I should have know it back then.
If the sentence in question made sense to you, perhaps it is you who has been drinking.
