Hussein and bin Laden are both Sunnis, but supposedly they would never work together, because Hussein was a secularist and bin Laden was a Wahabbi. That, of course, ignored the most recent twelve years of Iraqi history, wherein Hussein made a hard turn towards religious fanaticism to appeal precisely to Wahabbism, or the fact that Bin Laden's initial chief gripe was the presence of "infidels" in Saudi Arabia to keep Hussein in place.

All that crap about Israel started coming out only when he realized it played so well to the European press. His initial gripes were 1. Iraq/Kuwait, 2. Spain (still angry about the reconquistoras), 3. Bosnia, 4. Chechnya. Unlike the dictators in power, Bin Laden actually led a real movement with real issues. The dictators just yap about Israel to explain why God seems to love Americans and hate Muslims.

Now, bin Laden is a Sunni, yet Iran is Shiite. bin Laden and Iran cooperated a lot, and its suspected many of the top Taleban are in Iran.
