It was hard to ignore that Ned Lamont had something of a deer-in-the-headlights look during parts of last week's debate against incumbent senator Joe Lieberman. Lamont has an earnest and likeable Mr. Smith quality to go with his anxious mien, which made his innocent faux pas all the more endearing. Like when he said that there are 11 or 12 billion undocumented aliens in the country. Or when he championed former president Jimmy Carter's conservation programs from 20 years ago. It might have been Lamont's residual Reaganism sneaking through on the latter flub, and you know that's what Lieberman wants you to believe as he tries to make political roadkill of his potent primary challenger.
It's not like Ned Lamont can't count. As Lieberman reminds voters early and often, the words "Ned Lamont" cannot be uncoupled from"Greenwich millionaire." Lieberman's own most recent financial disclosure form, according to the Hartford Courant, listed investments of between $500,000 and $2 millionplus his New Haven and D.C. homesmaking him a sure-fire member of the Senate Millionaires' Club. But one supposes Lieberman feels he's entitled to the digs at Lamont's far greater wealth. His sense of entitlement, after all, knows no bounds.
During the hour-long debate last Thursday, Lieberman came across like more than just a man bent on retaining his power and privilege at any cost, as many observers have noted. He came across like a vengeful, unhinged hyena who would stop at nothing to derail Lamont's bid. At times he looked like he was morphing into the disgraced French soccer star of political campaigning, ready to headbutt his way into the Senate if need be.

I am a registered Republican who will likely vote for Lieberman. The GOP candidate doesn't impress me in the slightest, and now he's being asked by the state GOP to exit the race due to some "irregularities" related to gambling.
Lamont is skeery. He has helter-skelter looking eyes. And he's a Greenwich millionaire who's completely out of touch with what the rest of Connecticut needs, and his campaign seems to be totally based on opposing Iraq.
Lieberman may be a Dem, but he's fairly moderate and he sticks with his convictions.
My husband and I will most likely vote for Joe also. The GOP candidate with his weird gambling history sounds like a joke. I wish he would just drop out of the race...
I was in the East Hartford/Glastonbury area yesterday driving through residential areas. The number of Ned Lamont lawn signs I saw was positively frightening. House after house had them posted prominently out front. Some yards had 2 or more signs.
I never thought I'd say this, but Joe Lieberman NEEDS our votes... The last thing I want for CT is a Senator Lamont, and the GOP guy doesn't stand a chance anyway...
Connecticut ping!
Please Freepmail me if you want on or off my infrequent Connecticut ping list.
I live in Glastonbury and the "cut-and-run" crowd is always the most visible but when the election comes Joe L. will probably win. The hard core Dems are more conservative than the Repubs.
Liberal crap.
Yeah, you know you've picked up a quality publication that has man seeking man and woman seeking woman in the personals.
Its not True. Lamont's father was a rich Republican Yankee. Lamont went to some fancy schools and came home a dirty lib. The family and Lamont himself used to be Republicans, but they are Democrats now (like Lowell Wiecker).
Suppose New Haven were to be hit with a multi-kiloton device....
How could we tell?
