"I think the best bet would be to try to get to Amman via Damascus,"

Now is not the time to be thinking about moving anywhere in Beruit.

Let alone to Amman.

You quoted that out of context. It was in response to someone suggesting getting to the nonexistent Lebanon-Turkey border (you'd need to go through Syria anyway, and through some marginal areas near Tripoli that the State Department warned not to travel to even before this conflict began).

What I said was SHORT OF HUNKERING DOWN, it would be better to try to get to Amman than be stranded again in Damascus should the situation further escalate. With the Beirut-Damascus road being bombed, that's not the best option right now.
