Israel at War

**************************AN EXCERPT **************************************

Posted by Hugh Hewitt  | 9:55 AM

The news that Hezbollah has kidnapped two Israeli soldiers and that Israel has responded by invading Lebanon underscores the reality that Israel has no choice in the current situation.

Hamas wants a war with Israel.  Hezbollah wants a war with Israel.

When that war comes in full force, the West should make a stand in the U.N. and everywhere else and be very clear about the fact that the war was one of choice for the Islamist militias, and that Israel was obliged to accept war, but did not chose it.

Mark Daniels has been writing a magnificent series on the theology behind Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address, an address which concerned mostly the justice of war and even of its necessity.   (The most recent post is here, and previous posts here, here, here, and here.)

Watching the inevitable unfold on Israel's borders reminds me of this section of that address:

"Both parties deprecated war, but one of them would make war rather than let the nation survive, and the other would accept war rather than let it perish.  And the war came."

The Islamists to Israel's south and now north "would make war" rather than let Israel survive.

Israel will accept war rather than let itself perish.

And so the war has come again.  I suspect that it will get much, much worse before peace approaches the region again.  And it is the obligation of Western media to again and again announce clearly that it was not Israel's choice, but the Islamists.

And if, as may well happen, Israel decides that the only path to peace lies through taking the war to Damascus, it will not be our place to blame them at all for seeing clearly that only the sort of war that Lincoln superintended can bring peace and security for a time.

The Arab world plus Iran can prevent this, but they have not chosen to do so.  If there is any slim hope that the war that is looming can be avoided, the necessity for rapid and decisive action by those governments against the Islamists is clear.

The reality is, though, that Iran is headed at leats in part by people who want war as well.

Good people in 1860-1861, in the summer of 1914,  in 1938-1939 hoped that events might break a different way, that the forces wanting war would dissolve or somehow recoil from the obvious destruction ahead. There isn't much reason to hope that they will.

Still, if the U.N. is what it pretends to be, it ought to issue to the Islamists to the north and south of Israel, a demand for peace and for recognition of Israel's right to exist.

Lincoln made such an appeal in his First Inaugural:

May God be with Israel in her hour of need. I have often thought, "I would fight for Israel, if they would have a middle-aged old signal corps (been out since 1988!) goyim like me.." But not only is that stupid and unrealistic, but in this case it is uneccessary. God will be coming to the aid of Israel, wait and see.

May the children of Israel turn toward God now for their strength and deliverance. Somehow, in each and every Israeli's heart, I think they already have....

Reckless Predictions---
#1. The Hezzbies will use rockets w/ chemical tips if they start getting pounded. The weapons will be traced back to Iraqi WMD stock.

#2. If Sharon were still there, this would end at the gates of Damascus. Olmert won't go that far and will get cold feet.

#3. Assad is still in the same soiled undies that he was in when he rushed to his safe room when the IAF buzzed his vacation retreat last week.

"See #43...."
Looks like we shall see quite a bit being posted in the days to come. And you no doubt shall help champion this task.
I would imagine the IDF has complete battle plans as to what to take out by air very early in the conflict, so that the filth bags from the UN cannot step in to quickly and try to neutralize Israel's efforts, and save the scum bags from lossing a lot. Hamas and Hizbollah continue to show the world their true intentions and their brutal savegery. It is about time the US makes it clear to the UN and Europe in general it must support Israel's decisions. As we are painfully aware, Israel has for many years given much and received nothing in return. It is about time they can go after some of the worst scum on earth, with hands not tied behind their backs.

Operation Earnest Will---photos

********************

What was the USS Samuel B. Roberts doing in the Persian Gulf in 1988? Escorting Kuwaiti oil tankers.

By 1984, the bloody war between Iraq and Iran had spilled into the waters of the Persian Gulf. The targets were the oil tankers whose cargoes helped replenish each other's warchest, and the result was the Tanker War. In late 1986, Kuwait asked the United States to help protect its ships, and within several weeks, the Reagan administration acceeded to the request. The U.S. Navy prepared for the world's largest maritime convoy operation since World War II. It was to be called Operation Earnest Will, and it would involve scores of U.S. warships.

In my opinion Syria doesn't want to, because they know they'll loss. Iran is trying to convince Syria to take action against Israel. I believe Iran is attempting to keep the world focused on the Israel theater so they can maybe get a nuke built while attention is shifted. Iran also knows Syria would be the loser in a conflict with Israel but they really don't care about Arab nations. They'll use them if they can. The next few days should prove to be interesting.

Since there is news that the negotiations were ended because of "foreign pressure" egging Hammas on, I agree. Looks like Iran is trying like mad to bring the Mahdi.

The forces of darkness are making their moves. Perhaps Iran *wants* to get into a war. Perhaps they agreed with NK during their visit that Iran would attack Israel and NK would attack SK, such that we couldn't fight both wars. I can't help but wonder if China will take the opportunity to take Taiwan while we're distracted...

Syria could find itself dealing a war on a second front. Iraqi generals recently issued warnings to Syria that if they didn't do something about terrorists on their side of the border the Iraqis would.
