Spanish McDonald's ad prompts talk of a boycott; Bergen town's mayor calls billboard 'divisive'

The mayor of a small Bergen County, New Jersey town is calling for a McDonald's boycott if the fast-food chain does not take down a Spanish-language billboard.... Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan said the advertisement is "offensive" and "divisive"......"The true things that bind us together as neighbors and community is our belief in the American flag and our common language," Lonegan said. "And when McDonald's sends a different message, that we're going to be different now, that causes resentment."

Representatives for McDonald's and CBS Outdoor in New York, the company that owns the billboard on River Road in Bogota, defended the advertisement....said Jodi Senese, executive vice president for marketing for CBS Outdoor.

Jennifer Nagy, a marketing manager of McDonald's NY Metro Region, stood by the advertisement.

Lonegan was dismissive of the statement yesterday. "I think that their boilerplate press release is totally meaningless," Lonegan said. "It shows their utter disregard for this community."

Martin Perez, president of the Latino Leadership Alliance of New Jersey, an umbrella group of 250 Hispanic organizations, said there is an "anti-Latino" sentiment behind the opposition to the advertisement.

Deborah Jacobs, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey, said McDonald's has a first amendment right to advertise in Spanish.

But can't they just do it without making an ass out of themselves?

And just how should that happen in this instance?

There should be roughly the same s.d. numbers on each side of that bell curve.

You are all correct, however, in this case a local government official involved himself in this strictly private enterprise venture. McDucks has the right to make stupid choices and suffer the results without the Mayors comments.

What?

The Mayor has every right to make his comments and call for a boycott.

McDonalds doesn't have a right to make stupid choices without other people including the mayor commenting on it.

"Do you have a problem with Americans being required to speak spanish to keep or obtain a job?"

I can't speak for others, but I certainly do! The only exception would be for a Spanish teacher.

You are not too bright. It’s United we Stand, Divided we Fall. Just because you can does not bean you should. Your type would split America, and create a slave class. A sovereign country is designated by LANGUAGE, BORDERS, AND COUTURE. Spanish is like broken windows and closed building in a neighborhood.

Well, it happens every day. Check the help wanted pages for company requirements. Especially the six figure sales jobs.

Depends on what type of job it is. I work in health insurance, and applicants who speak Spanish are given a higher priority than those who don't.

I agree. The libs want not only the words, "under God," taken out of our Pledge of Allegiance, but they would also like to get rid of the word, "indivisible."

BECASUE WE ARE IN AMERICA. In addition THE corporation is being RACIST for IT IS choosing to communicate and pander to only one ethnic group. ENGLISH is the only language that cannot be associated with any one genetic race. Unlike Spanish which is only associated with Mexicans.

Which side would you take if he as Mayor urged citizens to boycott "Sams Firearms Shop" because Sam choose to advertise evil guns with a billboard?

Thank you for the information and post Liz!

In addition to complaining to McDonalds, I hope that everyone who did so will take the time to encourage Bergen town's mayor for taking this action. I've begun to notice that more and more city officials are coming around and taking action like this. I have continually written to thank them and have receive e-mails in return thanking me for support.

And this invasion of spanish speakers is not costing Americans their jobs?? What about a finance manager at a auto dealer? That is a six figure American job. Where do you draw the line? Do you draw a line?

There is only one side to take in your above scenario.

The Mayor is not confiscating guns -- the mayor is speaking freely. I support the Mayor's right to speak freely.

I urge you to reconsider your position.

LOL! Good old Al Sharpton calls for boycotts on a regular basis! You are right, what's wrong with Mayor Lonegan calling for one? McDonalds has made their bed, let them lie in it.

BTW I saw the Billboard this past week, here in NW NJ. I must admit, I was taken aback when I saw it. Yes, sadly we are being infiltrated with illegal aliens here too.

In a nation with so many differences among the populace--religious, political, ethnic, cultural--there has to be SOMETHING that ties us together on a social level. You simply HAVE to have a common language in order for all of those in the society to be on at least that common level--the ability to talk to each other, to communicate.

Very good point.

So those of you saying "why can't McDonald's advertise how they want", they can...as long as they do it IN ENGLISH. Americans should know OUR language to live here. And the Non-Americans should NOT be catered to.
