Spanish McDonald's ad prompts talk of a boycott; Bergen town's mayor calls billboard 'divisive'
STAR LEDGER ^ | Saturday, July 08, 2006 | ANA M. ALAYA Star-Ledger Staff

The mayor of a small Bergen County, New Jersey town is calling for a McDonald's boycott if the fast-food chain does not take down a Spanish-language billboard.... Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan said the advertisement is "offensive" and "divisive"......"The true things that bind us together as neighbors and community is our belief in the American flag and our common language," Lonegan said. "And when McDonald's sends a different message, that we're going to be different now, that causes resentment."

Representatives for McDonald's and CBS Outdoor in New York, the company that owns the billboard on River Road in Bogota, defended the advertisement....said Jodi Senese, executive vice president for marketing for CBS Outdoor.

Jennifer Nagy, a marketing manager of McDonald's NY Metro Region, stood by the advertisement.

Lonegan was dismissive of the statement yesterday. "I think that their boilerplate press release is totally meaningless," Lonegan said. "It shows their utter disregard for this community."

Martin Perez, president of the Latino Leadership Alliance of New Jersey, an umbrella group of 250 Hispanic organizations, said there is an "anti-Latino" sentiment behind the opposition to the advertisement.

Deborah Jacobs, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey, said McDonald's has a first amendment right to advertise in Spanish.

ROTFL.........as for surgical technique, I have the gentle touch of a loving mother, the political instincts of Attila the Hun, and the posting style of Jack The Ripper.

"If they are not in violation of the law, we have no right demanding they change their ad campaigns."

Like heck we have no right to demand McDonald's change their AD. They have the right to put the billboard up, the people and mayor of that town have EVERY right to protest it, and boycott McDonald's. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. It's a free country, and if enough people in this country don't want to have their language diluted or become a bilingual country, they are just as entitled to protest in any legal manner they desire.

I promise I won't use your name in vain with my friends----- but this story is much too good not to share. Not often you run into a true believer.

More yak, no proof. Can you even spell evidence, let alone present it? Does the word, "proof" mean anything to you? Of course not, why am I even bothering? Go on sweetie, flap your gums with your thoughtless comments to your equally challenged friends at your undoubtedly dim cocktail parties. Don't forget to cackle with the rest of the hens on cue. As for me, I'm done your ignorance. I won't be replying to you further.

Well, it's marketing pure and simple. Whether it maximizes sales or minimizes them remains to be seen.

When will be seeing McDonald's billboards in Chinese? The U.S. has a large Asian population. How about in Arabic? That ought to go over big, McDonald's billboards in Arabic. Hehehehehehehe. No pork sold at McDonald's.

"Deport the illegals and McDonalds will go back to English-only."

Actually, McDonald's would probably go out of business. Most of their workers these days are Hispanics, mostly Mexicans, and who knows how many are illegals.

Unlike Spanish which is only associated with Mexicans.

Are you for real? You DO KNOW that Spanish came from Spain, which is in Europe, which is across the Atlantic Ocean from North America.....you DO KNOW that? Don't you? Otherwise, my property taxes to the school district are even a bigger waste than I suspected.

Darkwolf is one of the best-known illegal immigration apologist-stooges on FR, so there is no hope there. But Read2Know, you are usually much more reasonable.

Yes, I'm SUCH an apologist for illegals that I repeatedly support the House version of immigration reform, and have pushed my own idea--that illegals be rounded up and put on once-weekly flights out of the country.

How ironic one of those you are berating for daring to think for themselves is named "Read2Know"--you obviously can't read, because you don't know a damned thing about my opinion, so why not stop lying and simply ask in the future?

As for McDonald's being a "privately owned company"...no, it is a publicly owned company. Do you now withdraw your argument?

No; you communists seem to think that because a company offers stock publicly that it is controlled by The People. But if the shareholders don't care, I certainly don't.

You frightened little commies are so threatened by someone doing what they wish with their own money. Don't like it? Don't go there. Just don't foist your childish socialism on the rest of us.

What I meant was, you're not even worth responding to. When you start calling people communists because they point out that a corporation is a publicly owned company (as McDonald's is in all ways--legally, structurally, literally), then you've gone off the deep end. Or, in your case, you're already there.

BTW (that's cute net shorthand, like your LOL), since you answered instantaneously, we can only assume that you're home on a Saturday night. Couldn't get a date?

Ah, the desperate one, who swears when he can't respond to being shown to be a liar, skulks back...

You went off on your silly rant in response to my asking "What's wrong with a billboard in Spanish". Then you stepped in it again, accusing me of being an "apologist" when I've said the House bill is the one that should be the law of the land AND we should round 'em up and send 'em home after hitting employers so harshly that they wouldn't dare hire illegals, who will then have no means of support--and you call THAT being an apologist for illegals. LOL!

BTW (that's cute net shorthand, like your LOL), since you answered instantaneously, we can only assume that you're home on a Saturday night. Couldn't get a date?

I'm going to let everyone look at the total ridiculousness of that, seeing how you responded to my post instantaneously. Here's some cute net shorthand for you just stepping in it: DUH!

I work at the computer and it's 3:41; I have a fulltime job and am working at my chosen field on my spare time. Happy now, BS artist?

Dude--you're looking more and more like an idiot with every post. And I can see you can't resist responding (even though you started this post by saying it "wasn't worth responding to"), so I'll await your next pratfall.
