Spanish McDonald's ad prompts talk of a boycott; Bergen town's mayor calls billboard 'divisive'

The mayor of a small Bergen County, New Jersey town is calling for a McDonald's boycott if the fast-food chain does not take down a Spanish-language billboard.... Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan said the advertisement is "offensive" and "divisive"......"The true things that bind us together as neighbors and community is our belief in the American flag and our common language," Lonegan said. "And when McDonald's sends a different message, that we're going to be different now, that causes resentment."

Representatives for McDonald's and CBS Outdoor in New York, the company that owns the billboard on River Road in Bogota, defended the advertisement....said Jodi Senese, executive vice president for marketing for CBS Outdoor.

Jennifer Nagy, a marketing manager of McDonald's NY Metro Region, stood by the advertisement.

Lonegan was dismissive of the statement yesterday. "I think that their boilerplate press release is totally meaningless," Lonegan said. "It shows their utter disregard for this community."

Martin Perez, president of the Latino Leadership Alliance of New Jersey, an umbrella group of 250 Hispanic organizations, said there is an "anti-Latino" sentiment behind the opposition to the advertisement.

Deborah Jacobs, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey, said McDonald's has a first amendment right to advertise in Spanish.

Apples and oranges. Greeks are not Third World illegals living off US taxpayers---and are not trying to get our laws changed to subsidize and accomodate their every whim.

Well if it's just Hispanics you don't like, you should have said so. That would have cleared up a lot of things early on. Too bad it took 153 posts for you to wave your true colors for all to see.

You sound like an open borders Marxist.

Lol, now that's funny. Let's see, the post you responded to was a single sentence that contained both "value to the employer" and bonuses to the employee for the greater value and you ignorantly invoke communism? You obviously have no idea at all what Marxism is all about if you can go from a capitalist concept like value to the employer to communism.

They are just a bunch of ignorant communist that hate Mexicans. In thier minds, the logic is so drum tight that when a challenge of any sort is mentioned they freak because they believe thier brains will leak out.

Then they'd have to clean it up off thier dirt floors and der big Japanese 4X4's with the large trailers full of Japanese recreational vehicles.

I think Melas misunderstood your statement. Many of us are descendants of those who came to America from foreign countries. How our ancestors dealt with language and actively earning income are what made America great. We don't call ourselves "Irish Americans" or "Greek Americans. We are AMERICANS!

I love your "true colors"!

There is an awakening happening in America. PC is purely for politicians. Liberals have attempted to shape the discussion by taking the high ground with passing everything through the PC filter. For a long time they have had their way, but I sense a change. Individual citizens are less intimidated now. The left is indignant that the unwashed have decided to can the PC stuff. After having led us to the "enlightened" view of what is PC, it is impossible for the liberals to comprehend the ingratitude.

Wish we could get that on a tee shirt.

XXL for me!

"You do what you gotta do. But know that it would please many of us if you'd do it in English."

You mean like the type you speak John? What is that called...? Debt to the hilt-500 credit score- GED- minimum wage- Appalacian-roadkill- English... English?

No thanks, your dripping hatred is bad for everyone, perhaps you will learn forgiveness in your life or you can remained trapped in your karmanic existence of black and white forever. Try to destroy the wheel of karma and accept true spirituality... sadly pathetic, but, as a good Hispanic Catholic... I forgive you for your trespass.

You used utterly false pretenses just like a Marxist. You start with a false premise, then attempt to drive your point home predicated on that very false premise.

1) We are not talking here about some guy who becomes fluent in Chinese, and gets a pay raise because he can help his company in a business overseas. We are talking about an American who loses his job because a swarm of spanish speaking CRIMINAL INVADERS have taken over a town, or a good portion of it, and do not and will not speak english. If you had an ounce of patriotism, you would have never gone down that road. It's all about money to you, national sovereignty be damned! In your cold blooded world, and using your logic, you would see no problem with a drug dealer getting a raise because he learned Farsi, and can now sell to middle easterners.

"The men who do not become Americans and nothing else are hyphenated Americans; and there ought to be no room for them in this country.

The man who calls himself an American citizen and who yet shows by his actions that he is primarily the citizen of a foreign land, plays a thoroughly mischievous part in the life of our body politic.

He has no place here; and the sooner he returns to the land to which he feels his real heart-allegiance, the better it will be for every good American.

There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else...." - Theodore Roosevelt
