Fallout Shelter

I'm gonna lock myself
In a fallout shelter
To get away from you.
I'm gonna bolt the door
Never come out no more,
Just to keep away from you.

Oh, you,
You, terrible you,
Tough, tough you!

I'm gonna lock my heart
To keep out radiation.
The kind you've got
Could blow out a nation.
And never more will I open the door,
Because I might get contamination.

From you,
terrible you,
Tough, tough you!

Well if you change your mind,
Just drop me a line.
Push it through the ventilation.

If you don't care, baby,
Slip me some air,
And I'll stay for another generation.

Oh, you,
Terrible you,
Tough, tough you!

Was at the air show at Kirtland AFB this past weekend. They had some booths displaying some of our newer technology.

Two booths made reference to the ABL. One showed how we are developing relays to allow us to shoot further than line of sight. The other booth was about the jet itself.

At the first booth the guy got real wide-eyed when I told my son that the enemy couldn't stop the lasers with mirrors because they are concentrated onto the target and would burn through the mirrored surface. He almost lost it when I said that these reflecting technologies (satellites, ground-based, and blimp-based) would be used to not only hit targets out of the usual line of sight, but also could combine several targeting lasers and increase the damage done. This was a best guess based on stuff I had read (Pop Sci, Scientific American, Jane's, etc.). The booth dude glared but had no comment.

The guys in the second booth were in a much more talkative mood. They told us about the high volatile chemicals on the jet that can only be replaced on the ground. When I asked if the plane was operational enough to help with the North Korean threat, they looked at each other, smirked, and one of them said, "No sir, it isn't flying yet."

The look and smirk said to me "Are you gonna give the company line or am I?"

I have the feeling things are much further along then we are led to believe. I also think it is highly probable that the malfunction of the North Korean missile wasn't an accident.

"Err, missing is the air intake and how to stop the incoming radiactive air? This was drawn in the 50's and looks it. We were so naive then (I know. I was there). Our neighbor built a much better and stronger shelter just a few doors away. I know where I'm heading when Kimmo sends the big one. Trouble is, the new owners of the shelter and house above it are gays. What then?"

Well, first you need to figure out how to duck-and-cover without bending over...

"How about the President? His response has been pathetic. Playing it as a game. He is the one that has to make decisions to defend the country. I guess we now have to live with countries lauching missles at us?"

I think the President is privy to a little more intel than the rest of us here.

Even if you accept this unverified report that the missile was aimed at Hawaii, the big question is "why" Kim sent off his flurry of dongs. Importantly, many indications suggest that the NK economy is in extremis and Kim is seeing meaningful dissent for the fist time. Something may well be going on internally in NK; if so then a business-as-usual non-response from Bush would be exactly the correct prescription, as it is for any pathetic yapping little cur. As things stand: Kim has utterly shot his wad, and got nothing for it: no bilateral talks, no easing of sanctions, not even much attention, nothing, nada, bupkes, zilch, zip.

Interestingly, if this is the dynamic at work, then even if we shot down the missile (to which I'd give even odds, actually) we would be well advised to keep that to ourselves, and let the world think it just blew up or fell apart or something. It makes Kim look incompetent as well as insane, and puts a bit of a crimp in his sales efforts for his weaponry.

My sense is that Kim will cease to be a problem soon.

Above all else, George W. Bush is a Texas poker player. Always remember that.

Thanks for that post!

"Dore Alpert" is, of course, the great Herb Alpert, pre-Tijuana Brass, whose A&M Studios almost single-handedly kept the melody in popular music during the '60s and '70s. Herb's wife, Lani Hall, is the most enthralling jazz/latin singer on the planet. Both recently played with their old pal Sergio Mendes at the Hollywood Bowl, Lani singing four of her old Brasil '66 songs with Herb backing up on trumpet, and they brought down the house. Very talented people.

Someone, not MSM, reported that N. Korea had actually fired more missles than what was reported here.

My main concern is not nukes so much as those missles' containing biological warfare!

How about the President?

Congress is required to approve a joint resolution to grant war powers. And that is a good thing. There is no such thing as "Bushes War". Congress alone has the power to request updates from the Commander in Chief (currently every 60 days for 1441); and they alone fund troop mobilizations and withdrawals. The president is correct in using the US state department and exhausting all diplomatic efforts before resorting to requesting military action. This keeps the rhetoric toned down on both sides. Look at how long it took for congress to approve the Iraq operations. And the Iraqis had been shooting at our aircraft for years.

That said, I would not want to live in Hawaii. This will get downplayed lest it really hurt tourism there.

Wanna speed it up---let Japan repeal Article 9...nothing else, just REPEAL it..

I think that repeal or major revision of Article 9 is likely to happen.

This is too easy... Just look at the history of how N. Korea operates. Kimmie's trying to provoke a strong response. Probably thinks that if he can't scare Bush, he can at least scare enough of the left here to force Bush to negotiate from a weaker position / make concessions. The last thing he wants is for us to continue on basically the same, calm course we have been. Unfortunately, Bush has to show just a little concern here (political pressure here.)

As I posted elsewhere, the libs are like a parent who freaks out when the baby cries, when in reality all that is needed is to check for poop in the diapers. In this case, there wasn't even much poop.

That's darn interesting. How does that compare with Israel?
China? (I know, the Israelis and Chicoms have nukes...)

Lot's of cool stuff with or for military apps. goes by my desk in electronics engineering mags and mags like "Machine Design", Design News, etc., every month. (Heck, I'm just an audio electronics engineer!) The REALLY cutting edge stuff is probably too classified to make these mags, but even so, it's pretty clear that on a tech basis, we can't lose, so long as we stay on course...
