MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico's presidential election is too close to call between a leftist anti-poverty campaigner and the conservative ruling party candidate locked in a tie, a respected exit poll said on Sunday.
The extremely close vote raised fears of a political crisis if any of the main candidates challenge the results and call street protests.
Pre-election polls had showed Felipe Calderon of the ruling party and Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the left-wing former mayor of Mexico City, in a virtual tie. Exit polls from Mexico's two main television station and the El Universal newspaper said they could not declare a winner.
El Universal said the race was between Lopez Obrador and Calderon. Neither of the TV stations mentioned Roberto Madrazo of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, which ruled Mexico for most of the 20th century.
The Federal Electoral Institute was expected to announce official results at around 11 p.m. If it is unable to call a winner, Mexico could face days or weeks of legal wrangling and protests similar to the fight that followed the U.S. presidential election in 2000.

52% counted Calderon lead 439,276 or 2.04%
53% and the lead is 1.99%
The post above shows the lead about 1200 higher on the prior update. Do your figures show the lead decreasing?
In Calderon states 49.69% of the precints have reported.
In Obrador states 53.38% of the precints have reported.
Yeah but see post 244.
I have been to Mexico zillions of times and have never seen a black person. Strange.
Bingo.
Apparently it's too close to call and won't be decided until Wednesday ??

What is strange about that?
Afro-Mexicans are less than 1% of the population.
Most live on the southeastern coastline.
Mostly in Veracruz.
I have been to Utah zillions of times and have not seen a black person. Ditto Idaho.
LOL
Try to find a black person in Scottsdale that isn't a professional athlete....
Never made it to Greenland, I tried a few times, but did a few great trips to Iceland.
Wonderful place.
Yep the names should be reversed.
So say the Federal elections officials. Nevertheless, those of us with nothing better to do with our lives are following the numbers on the Mexican automated reporting system. It's interesting because Calderon's percentage of the total vote has kept gradually following throughout the count, and Obrador's has been increasing. In the last few updates, we've seen the raw margin decrease, too. Interesting... in a vote-wonk sort of way.
But there are those on this thread that think that would be fine and dandy. Go figure.
You never saw Karl Malone on your travels?
I tried to set up a standby trip to Nuuk on FirstAir, but too many logistics for an airline employee pass. Also should have done the day trip to Kulusuk from Rekyjavik, didn't have the dough at the time.
