Passenger cuts cabbie's throat
A 19-year-old man was charged with attempted murder after an Anchorage cab driver's throat was cut with box cutter, Alaska State Troopers said.
During the attack in the moving cab, the vehicle veered off the crowded Sterling Highway and landed in a ditch, troopers said.
Troopers don't know the motive for the assault. They say a man who later identified himself to investigators as Samir Ahmad pulled the box cutter on Alaska Cab driver Juan Estrella on Tuesday afternoon after hours of driving around Anchorage and then to Soldotna looking for a hotel Ahmad claimed he wanted to go to.
Troopers say Ahmad, who arrived in Alaska from Florida last week and carried a Puerto Rican passport, did not speak English well and was having trouble communicating with Estrella. That Estrella spoke Spanish, apparently, did not alleviate the miscommunication.(snip)
