Flights in and out of three Southland airports have been halted because of a power failure affecting radar and the Southern California air traffic control system.
The affected airports are
[Los] Angeles International Airport,
Bob Hope Airport in Burbank and
Ontario International Airport.
"A power outage at the Los Angeles Air Route Traffic Control Center Tuesday cut communications and brought incoming and outgoing flights in Southern California to a standstill, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said.
"We lost everything, we lost all power to phone lines, computers, everything," said Allen Kenitzer, a regional spokesman for the FAA.
The outage was reported around 6 p.m., Kenitzer said, and the cause was not known.
Just saw this on KCAL9. LAX has been shut down since 5:30 p.m., no flights in or out. This inevitably affects airports/flights all over the country and internationally.
Wondering why the back-up generator has not kicked in. The cause is based in Palmdale (high desert), where a power outage affected a major regional air traffic control center.
We had area-wide power outages in the west L.A. area Sunday and Monday, not far from LAX.
Few details on this breaking story thus far.
