NEW ORGANIZATION HOPES TO PUT A DENT IN CYBER TERROR

A new organization established in Britain in late 2005 hopes its team of volunteer cyber experts will ensure that the terrible events of July 7 2005 will never again happen in the U.K.

Vigil Network is an independent, non-profit organization that monitors the online radical Islamic movement. Its mission is to provide reliable assistance and information to the British authorities and help them foil terrorist plots and break up Jihadist cells.

Vigil Network’s Dominic Whiteman emphasized that the network does not replace British law enforcement, but acts as a reliable interface between volunteer terror trackers and the British authorities.

Whiteman cited the example of British resident and Vigil member Glen Jenvey, who obtained solid evidence that brought to justice one of the most dangerous perpetrators of terrorist acts, Abu Hamza.

By way of background, Whiteman said that when a video tape Jenvey had obtained from Abu Hamza was played at the trial in Seattle of James Ujaama (http://www.cnn.com/2003/LAW/04/14/Ujaama.plea ), he changed his plea from not guilty to guilty and agreed to give evidence against Hamza. This triggered the chain of events that led to radical Islamic cleric Abu Hamza’s trial and subsequent conviction (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4690224.stm ).

Vigil Network’s goal, Whiteman said, is to increase the number of these success stories and help improve the British ability to fight against the ever growing threat of terrorism.

RADICAL ISLAM AT ITS WORST

Most recently, exiled radical Islamic cleric Omar Bakri Muhammad has caught the attention of Vigil members. His group, Al Muhajiroun, was dismantled in 2004 and Bakri Muhammad took up residence in Lebanon.

However, Whiteman said Vigil members have found out that along with other radical Islamics, Bakri Muhammad is now spreading his messages of hate in Islamic chat rooms on the Paltalk Internet Network.

According to Vigil, his trackers have gathered transcripts and recordings of his talks, in which British Muslims are told to hate other faiths and carry on Jihad (Islamic holy war). Whiteman said that the result is that despite not being able to physically access their leader, Bakri Muhammad’s followers are not receiving regular incitement through his nightly talks held on www.paltalk.com.

Whiteman said it appears that Lebanon and Yemen have now become Al-Qaeda training bases for British and other Muslims, who are being educated to fight and hate the United Kingdom (and no doubt the United States as well).

According to Whiteman, “Bakri Muhammad’s terror school is set to open this summer to its first British Jihadi trainees. Hatred towards the Saudi and British royal family as well as the usual threats against the Queen, Prime Minister Tony Blair and President Bush is heard during the whole session on the several hours long talks in the chat rooms.”

Whiteman said that two Vigil members have been monitoring the Paltalk nightly diatribes since May10.

“They successfully infiltrated the Paltalk chat room using different ID’s he said. “As a result, evidence in form of audio and text recordings have been gathered where incitements for racial and religious hatred, financing of Mujahideen and legitimization of acts of terrorism against the unbelievers are blatantly and overtly expressed by Bakri (Muhammad) and his followers.”

Whiteman said that one of the features of Paltalk is you can make any other user “your pal” without their knowledge, so that you know when they are on line.

Whiteman said two Vigil trackers have made Bakri Muhammad and others their online pals, “so that it will make finding them easier, should they want to open another room or should the existing one be closed down by Paltalk.”

He added, “Each evening Jihadist’s music and chanting is heard playing at the opening of the talks with battle cries and explosive sounds. When questioned recently about the reason for this, Abu Baraa (a participant) replied it was for motivational reasons.”

FBI looking at Web site showing shooting of Quran
The Associated Press ^ | July 10, 2006

Posted on 07/10/2006 6:33:17 PM PDT by keat

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. The F-B-I will look into an online video that shows two men shooting a Quran with a military rifle and then leaving the bullet-riddled holy book at a Chattanooga mosque.

F-B-I agent Tim Burke said the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations asked the Justice Department to investigate the incident. He said no one from the Chattanooga Muslim community had complained.

Justice Department spokesman Eric Holland said the request would be reviewed carefully.

Ibrahim Hooper, a spokesman for the Islamic group, said the video may have been recorded in Chattanooga a year ago.

The video titled "kill the koran" was posted on MySpace-dot-com last month. It could still be seen on the Web site today.

A man on the Web site identifies himself as "mully88" and claims to live in Chattanooga. The author's profile lists as heroes (quote) "anybody that has killed a muslim or at least tried to kill a muslim." The site also contains slurs against Hispanics and blacks.

The video shows the man purchasing a Quran at a bookstore, going to a wooded area and shooting the book, then throwing it on the ground outside the door of the Chattanooga Islamic center.

Two men plead guilty to cigarette racketeering enterprise that funded Hezbollah

DETROIT -- Two men pleaded guilty Friday to charges of conspiracy to violate the "Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act" (RICO), U.S. Attorney Stephen J. Murphy announced today.

Imad Majed Hamadeh, 51, of Dearborn Heights, and Theodore Schenk, 73, of Miami Beach, Fla., pleaded guilty here before U.S. District Judge Gerald E. Rosen to the following charges: operating a criminal enterprise to traffic in contraband cigarettes, counterfeit Zig Zag rolling papers and counterfeit Viagra; producing counterfeit cigarette tax stamps; transporting stolen property; and money laundering. Sixteen other defendants faced the same charges. Some of the profits derived from the illegal enterprise were given to Hezbollah, a Designated Foreign Terrorist Organization (DFTO), according to the indictment. The enterprise operated from: Lebanon, Canada, China, Brazil, Paraguay and the United States. Hamadeh and Schenk face a maximum possible penalty of 20 years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine.

U. S. Attorney Murphy was joined in the announcement by: Daniel D. Roberts, special agent in charge of the Detroit FBI; Valerie J. Goddard, special agent in charge, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; Brian M. Moskowitz, special agent in charge, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE); Maurice Aouate, special agent in charge of the Detroit Field Office of the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation; and Michael Cleary, special agent in charge, FDA-Office of Criminal Investigation.

"Combating terrorism and protecting our citizens at home and abroad, is the Department of Justice's number one priority. Raising money for designated terrorist organizations, like Hezbollah, is a serious crime which will be vigorously pursued in the Eastern District of Michigan," U.S. Attorney Murphy said. "We will do everything we can to expose, disrupt and prevent any all criminal activity which supports terrorist organizations."

According to Brian M. Moskowitz, special agent in charge of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Office of Investigations in Detroit, "ICE will continue to work with other law enforcement agencies to dismantle criminal organizations. Racketeering is a serious crime and ICE will continue to investigate those who exploit our borders to facilitate their criminal enterprise."

Also named in the indictment and currently awaiting a Jan. 7 trial are: Karim Hassan Nasser, 37, of Windsor, Ont.; Fadi Mohamad-Musbah Hammoud, 33, of Dearborn; Majid Mohamad Hammoud, 39, of Dearborn Heights; Jihad Hammoud, 47, of Dearborn; Youssef Aoun Bakri, 36, of Dearborn Heights; Ali Najib Berjaoui, 39, of Dearborn; Mohammed Fawzi Zeidan, 41, of Canton; and Adel Isak, 37, of Sterling Heights. An indictment is only a charge, and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government's burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Others charged in the indictment, who are currently wanted as fugitives, believed to be outside the United States, are: Imad Mohamad-Musbah Hammoud, 37 of Lebanon, formerly of Dearborn; Hassan Ali Al-Mosawi, 49, of Lebanon; Hassan Hassan Nasser, 36, of Windsor, Ont.; Ali Ahmad Hammoud, 64, of Lebanon; Karim Hassan Abbas, 37, formerly of Dearborn; Hassan Mohamad Srour, 30, of Montreal, Quebec; Naji Hassan Alawie, 44, of Windsor, Ont.; and Abdel-Hamid Sinno, 52, of Montreal, Quebec.

The indictment alleges that Imad Hammoud, along with his partner, Hassan Makki, ran a multi-million dollar per year contraband cigarette-trafficking organization headquartered in the Dearborn, Mich., area between 1996 and 2002. Makki pleaded guilty in 2003 in federal district court in Detroit to racketeering and providing material support to Hezbollah. Some of the cigarettes were supplied to the organization by Mohamad Hammoud, who was convicted in 2002 in federal district court in Charlotte, N.C., of, among other crimes, racketeering and providing material support to Hezbollah. Makki and Mohamad Hammoud, who were not charged in the indictment unsealed today, were identified as un-indicted co-conspirators. They both are currently serving prison sentences relating to their activities in this matter.

The indictment further charges that the group obtained low-taxed or untaxed cigarettes in North Carolina and the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation in New York, and brought them into Michigan and the State of New York for the purpose of evading tens of millions of dollars in state cigarette taxes. The enterprise obtained large profits by reselling the cigarettes at market prices in Michigan and New York. The enterprise sometimes used counterfeit tax stamps to make it appear that the state taxes had been paid.

According to the indictment, portions of the profits made from the illegal enterprise were given to Hezbollah. Some members of the enterprise charged a "Resistance Tax," being a set amount over black market price per carton of contraband cigarettes, which their customers were told would be going to Hezbollah. Some members of the enterprise also solicited money from cigarette customers for "the orphans of martyrs program" run by Hezbollah in Southern Lebanon to support the families of Hezbollah suicide bombers and other terrorist operations.

In announcing the guilty pleas, U.S. Attorney Stephen J. Murphy commended the work of the FBI; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; special agents of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement; the Internal Revenue Service; the Food and Drug Administration; Michigan State Police; and the Dearborn Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kenneth R. Chadwell and Barbara L. McQuade are prosecuting this case.

ICE arrests fugitive criminal alien convicted of shooting Border Patrol agent

PHOENIX, Ariz. - A Mexican national convicted of shooting and critically wounding a Border Patrol agent nearly two decades ago in southern Arizona is back in custody today facing federal prosecution again following his arrest by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) yesterday.

Humberto Fuentes, 51, was arrested by ICE detention and removal officers at his residence in East Phoenix after ICE received a tip from another federal agency that he had returned to the United States illegally. Fuentes is scheduled to make his initial appearance in federal court here at 3:00 p.m. today to face a felony charge of re-entry after deportation.

Fuentes was convicted and previously deported for shooting and critically wounding Border Patrol Agent Frank J. Hawkins in 1978, near the port of entry at San Luis. After assaulting Hawkins, Fuentes fled to Mexico, but was captured the same day by Mexican authorities. Fuentes was charged with illegal importation of a firearm, but Mexican officials failed to prosecute him and he was soon released.

Fuentes re-entered the United States illegally, but was eventually located and apprehended by agents with the former Immigration and Naturalization Service in Tempe in August 1987. Fuentes was convicted of assaulting Hawkins and, after serving a sentence in federal prison, was deported from the United States in July 1991.

“One of ICE's top enforcement priorities is locating and arresting alien fugitives like Fuentes who pose a clear threat to the safety of our communities,” said Phillip C. Crawford, field office director for ICE detention and removal operations in Arizona. “ICE is working with its local, state, and federal law enforcement partners to identify these individuals and take them off the streets”.

Female suicide bomber organization funded by Fatah

Snip: The Fatah terrorist organization Al-Aksa Martyrs’ Brigades has established a secret unit comprised of female suicide bombers from Judea, Samaria, Gaza and Jerusalem, according to a spokeswoman.

Um-al-Abed, a woman who claimed to be speaking for the terrorist group, told reporters on Monday at a news conference in Gaza that “We have so far recruited 100 women for the new unit.”

Several masked women who said they were Fatah members were also present at the gathering. “We are expecting more female suicide bombers,” said Um-al-Abed, according to a report in The Jerusalem Post.

Two Islamic "terror" books banned

Snip: TWO Islamic books have been banned after the Classification Review Board found they incited terrorism. The books, Defence of the Muslim Lands, and Join the Caravan, have been refused classification and can no longer be sold within Australia or imported into the country.

Jeb Bush asks Dozier to quit

Snip: In a news release late last month, Dozier called Islam "a cult'' and said the mosque's plans have residents in the predominantly "black Christian neighborhood" feeling less safe and secure. "Their general welfare is being jeopardized by knowing that Muslims are invading their neighborhood," Dozier said. He said residents worry that Muslims will convert vulnerable young black people to Islam. "With such a cult in our neighborhood, we believe that our neighborhood could become a breeding ground for terrorists,'' he said.

"'United Nations killed my son'
Terror victims' families blame global body for kickbacks that funded suicide attacks"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "JERUSALEM – The United Nations bears responsibility for the murder of Israeli civilians killed in the past few years by Palestinian suicide bombers, families of terror victims here said.

"The U.N. is partly responsible for the death of my son," said Miri Avitan, whose son Assaf was killed in Jerusalem by a Palestinian suicide bomber in December 2001.

"Money that was meant for the Iraqi [people] got to Saddam and he wrote a check to reward the murderers of my kid," Avitan said.

Avitan was one of several family members of Israeli terror victims to blame the U.N. for revenues from its oil-for-food program kicked back to deposed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein and funneled by Hussein to Palestinian terror organizations."

"Old media unrepentant on damaging disclosures"
By David Limbaugh
Tuesday, July 11, 2006

COLUMN SNIPPET: "Instead of apologizing, they congratulated themselves for defending the Constitution. Bill Keller of the New York Times and Dean Baquet of the Los Angeles Times co-wrote an op-ed defending their decision. New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof followed up with a supporting editorial.

Keller and Baquet wrote, "But the virulent hatred espoused by terrorists … is also aimed at our values, at our freedoms and at our faith in the self-government of an informed electorate. If the freedom of the press makes some Americans uneasy; it is anathema to the ideologists of terror."

Who says "some Americans" are "uneasy" about the freedom of the press? It is not the "freedom" that makes people uneasy but the reckless abuse of that freedom."

"NSA plays 'war games' to teach network security"
ZDNet Australia ^ | 07/10/06 | Anne Broache

Posted on 07/10/2006 11:14:17 PM PDT by AKSurprise

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The National Security Agency may be known for its stealthy eavesdropping techniques, but it's going public with advice for how to train a new generation to defend against computer threats.

Representatives from the usually secretive agency appeared at a SANS Institute event in Washington, to divulge "lessons learned" from their latest cyberdefence exercise.

The exercise, which took place over four days in April, pitted students from the five US military academies and the Air Force's postgraduate technology school against "bad guys" at NSA headquarters.

The NSA-sponsored exercise, unlike other governmental attempts at bolstering cyber-preparedness, has been regularly taking place for six years. Friday's public presentation, however, was described as the first of its kind. (The Department of Homeland Security, the agency chiefly responsible for safeguarding federal agencies' cybersafety, wrapped up its first large-scale mock attack earlier this year, with an analysis of its results expected this summer.)

NSA representatives said they hoped the informal briefing would provide a wake-up call to all network managers, both inside and outside the government."
