Governor Mitt Romney statement today regarding the Massachusetts Protection of Marriage Amendment

Romney/Marriage Watch

Kathryn Jean Lopez]

Governor Mitt Romney made the following statement today regarding the Massachusetts Protection of Marriage Amendment:

“Our elected representatives in the Legislature will soon hold a historic vote. It regards the institution of marriage.

But it will not be a vote for or against same sex marriage.

No, it will be a vote for or against democracy.

The people here today have followed the law, followed the process established in the Constitution, and gathered an astounding 170,000 signatures. Their effort means that the people, the citizens, will be free to choose how marriage is defined in Massachusetts.

This is democracy pure and simple.

Of course, democracy can be squashed. Only one fourth of the legislators must vote for democracy, for this question, this choice, to be given to the people. But it is conceivable that some will try to block a vote by the people by blocking a vote of the legislature.

We here are speaking for democracy and the rule of the law. Whether you agree that marriage should be reserved for a man and a woman or not, surely you can agree that the course of democracy, established by the Constitution, must be followed. Is there anything more fundamental to this Commonwealth and this country than the principle that power is reserved to the people, that government is the servant, not the master?

We ask for one thing: the constitutionally prescribed vote of the Legislature. Let the people speak.”

He will have to let his true Conservative nature come out on the social issues and he will have that chance as he separates from liberal Mass where he has Governed quite effectively .

Stop it! You guys are crackin' me up!

Social conservatism is the most important part of conservatism. It is the soul and life of conservatism.

Fiscal conservatism without social conservatism is a corpse, fit only to be buried to keep the stink away.

He is conservative on the social issues. He would crush any Democrat in the Midwest, where his style comes across best.

Most FReepers are a bit too sophisticated to be taken in by such nonsense.

Romney is not ideal, but he is better than the alternatives, even Senator Allen. Romney has business, leadership, and executive skills that no other Republican contender can match.

Romney-Allen would be a superb ticket. That would position and prepare Allen for the presidency in 2016-2024.

I'd rather have Romney or Giuliani than Allen or McCain.

This conservative chooses "none of the above".

Romney-Allen would be a superb ticket.

Surely you jest.

Both candidates are phonies when it comes to prolife and, for that matter, a whole range of conservative core issues.

I would not be able to vote for either of them, even in a general election.

Lol, allen has much better executive experience than romney. He was governor of VA from 1993-1997 and had a fantastic term as governor. Don't pull this, well romney had a dem legisltuare, allen did too. Yea, romney balanced the budget without raisng taxes, thats nice but thats about all he did. Allen kept the budget under control, pushed welfare reform, juvenile sentencing reform, eliminated parole for violent offenders, pushed for some of the highest education standards, and helped eventually bring the va legislatures under republican control. yea, allen sure has crappy executive experience. *rolls eyes*

"This conservative chooses "none of the above"."

Oh please tell us in all your infinite wisdom who you think should/can realistically be the nominee ? No fantasy garbage , but a realistic answer will suffice...

"Saying he would get obliterated is just flat out lying and shows your nothing more than a romney humper who can't see there are other viable candidates out there."

Whatever you say McCainiac....

"And for the record i will never vote for john mccain, not for nominee, not for president but that doesnt mean i'm not capable of being objective about him, unlike you with regards to all other candidates but romney."

You, objective ? Now that's funny ! You've shown how politically inept and logically impotent you are by saying McCain is a "Social Conservative" in a previous post, and then denouncing him in this post . Get real .....

Spare me the crap....You bellowed and screamed at me, and now you can't even come up with a logical and probable choice ....Shut your yap until you can put forward an idea, and quit criticising me for saying that Romney is the one to watch , he is the darkhorse in '08 , like it or not .I'm stating fact ...

Allen is too much like Bush. I think the country wants someone different. Maybe someone without a famous dad who is named George. McCain is hated by way too many conservatives even though he is conservative on paper. Even if neither Romney or Giuliani win, they should at least be considered for VP. I don't want to listen to another 8 years of Halliburton whines from the lefties about the new VP.

Lol, now we both know your off the deep end. I am no mccainiac and anyone who knows me on this forum knows that as well. Mccain has a socially conservative record, whether we like it or not. He is pro life, although he hasnt been very fond of religious people that is true, but he generally sides with us. He never went off the deep end like romney and acted like a social liberal to get elected. I have the intellectual honesty to see that, you do not.

I respect his social conservatism ,b ut i dont like his pro amnesty, anti 1st amendment, gang of 14, pro global warming, and his uber ego.

Romney is a flaming rino and that will come out. Look at both his 1994 and 2002 campaigns. He ran as lincoln chafee but now that he wants to be president all of a sudden hes a 'conservative' and hes fooling people like you.

Well I don't knock Allen , he is a good Conservative . I just don't think he can take a punch ,so to speak, and he comes off as a bit "stuffy" . He's a good Senator though .

I am granting Romney a hefty amount of wiggle room though , having governed one of the bluest states, and having governed fairly Conservatively given the politics of that state . I truly believe that as he goes national, he will come into line with red state ideals . That doesn't mean that he's not principled by any means , look where he is Governing and compare it to a majority red state nation . It makes sense if he has done some things that stink of Mass politics , if he pushes Mass ideals at the rest of us , he will fail (and rightly so) .

If Romney doesn't pass the gun rights test, he will not get my primary vote , but I will allow him to "get it right" for the national level because he will be a very effective candidate and legislator . He is also one of the few who can beat Hillary .We need to give him time to see where he stands on these national issues .

Don't be foolish , McCain is vehemently anti-gun . Don't try and push McCain off as a Social Conservative , saying you would never vote for him, and then bashing Romney .

Three posts of nonsensical criticism and yet you offer no ideas on an ideal candidate . Crudities ? I'm not the one calling people "Romney humpers" around here . You know better than that ,so again I say , spare me the crap .....

Again, show me where I posted "Romney humpers" or anything of the sort.

The "ideal candidate" will be an actual conservative...pro-life, pro-liberty, strong on the borders and defense, pro-American sovereignty, and a Constitutionalist.
