There's a sleeper of a movie made in 1972 called 'Tomorrow' that was a precursor for Duvall's role in 'Tender Mercies'.
It's one of my all time favorites.

Duvall is a descendant of Lee's, so that helps. ;-)

I think Kevin Costner, starring and directing "Open Range" made it better. I had never seen it before, but AMC was playing it leading up to "Broken Trail".

Best actor ever. Ditto that. There were many very great movies in which he played integral roles that many don't relize was him.
Ned Pepper in True Grit, Frank Burns in MASH etc. He was in Apocalypse Now for maybe 10 minutes but it is his performace that everybody remembers.

I love Duvall. I don't remember him ever making a bad movie. He was on O'Reilly last week and I got the impression he is definitely not a Hollywood liberal.
BTW, Broken Trail was a great movie.

Rooster Cogburn: "I mean to kill you in one minute Ned", "or see you hanged in Fort Smith at Judge Parker's convenience", "Which will it be?"
Ned: "I call that bold talk for a one eyed fat man"
Rooster: "Fill your hand, you son of a bitch."

We thoroughly enjoyed "Broken Trail" and have recommended it to several other folks. Robert Duvall is such a terrific actor that he makes everyone else in the movie look good.

He was great in The Apostle. It made a great sermon

The best scene in Western history: John Wayne with the reins in his teeth, twirling that lever action rifle while he rides down on Lucky Ned Pepper and his cohorts.

I read that he wanted to do that movie based on listening to preachin' on the radio. If I surmise correctly by your screen name, you know about preachin' on the radio.
He made that movie with his own money. Favorite scene:
BillyBob Thornton played a troublemaker who did not like nigras and white people worshipping together. When The Apostle took him out of the church to lay an ass whoopin' on him, he says, "Come on son; I don't even the Lord's help for this."
And proceedes to whoop his ass.
Duvall also did a cameo as Carl's Daddy in Sligblade. The 15th Anniversary has a wonderful special feature of Billy Bob talking about how that came together - not just Duvall, but the whole making of that awesome movie
