Two suicide car bombers launched a failed attack on a US military convoy in southern Afghanistan today, killing only themselves, police said.
The violence comes as more than 10,000 US-led forces hunt resurgent militants across southern Afghanistan.
Zabul provincial police chief Noor Mohammed Paktin said three men were involved in planning the suicide attack, though only two were inside the Toyota vehicle that blew up near an American convoy.
Police are searching for the third man, who is an Afghan, he said.
The attack happened just outside Zabul provinces capital of Qalat.
No civilians or coalition soldiers were wounded, said governors spokesman Ali Khail.
Paktin said police had received information that the men wanted to commit a terrorist act.
A purported Taliban commander, Mullah Masum, telephoned The Associated Press to claim responsibility, but mentioned only one attacker.
Masum promised there would be more attacks in the future, adding: We will pursue suicide attacks against coalition forces.
All I can add is a heartfelt wish that all of your attacks turn out exactly like this one.
Own goal!
Hooray! General George S. Patton told his troops, "I don't want you to die for your country, I want you to make the other SOB die for his country."
The problem is that we must kill tens of thousands Islamics at a time, not a few at a time. Third Worlders can multiply faster than we can manufacture M-16 ammo.
