“A little bit of the magic has gone out of our world”
Sunday January 22 2012
SNIPPET: “For a man who wasn’t much given to funeral-going himself, Aengus Fanning got a fine send-off from the congre-gation that packed the Church of St Joseph, Glasthule, Co Dublin, last Friday.”
SNIPPET: “He left Tralee to become a trainee reporter in the Midland Tribune in Birr in 1964, working for his uncle and marrying his first wife Mary while living in Birr. He joined the Irish Independent as a news reporter in 1969 and became agricultural correspondent in 1973 and news analysis editor in the early Eighties.
In 1984 he was appointed editor of the Sunday Independent in succession to Michael Hand and it was a job that consumed him for the next 28 years until his death this week at the age of 69. As his son Dion said last week: “He died with his boots on . . . he didn’t see the point in retirement.””
SNIPPET: “Special mention was made of Bernie Guerin, mother of the murdered Sunday Independent reporter Veronica Guerin, who was accompanied to the funeral by Veronica’s husband Graham Turley and their son Cathal.”

“Ex-CAB bosss role in weapons sting”
By Lynne Kelleher
MONDAY, JANUARY 16, 2012
SNIPPET: “FORMER CAB boss Barry Galvin has told how he helped to nab an international supplier for the Iranian missile programme in his latest role in cleaning up the criminal justice system in the Seychelles.
The man responsible for waging war on drugs barons in Ireland after the murder of Veronica Guerin was hired by the government of the Indian Ocean islands to help combat corruption and money laundering.
In the RTÉ series Hostile Environment, the former chief legal officer and founder of CAB reveals how he was signed up to help clean up the paradise islands by bringing in the Al Capone-style laws that collared Irelands biggest crime lords.
He said: “After the shooting of Veronica Guerin there was as serious confidence crisis in the justice system and police in Ireland. The government embarked on a process of taking the money out of crime and drug trafficking and organised crime. It is nabbing the bad guys money.”
“Judge criticises cost of bringing Gilligan to court on mobile charges”
27/01/2012 - 11:02:55
SNIPPET: “Gilligan (aged 59), whose address was given as “care of Portlaoise Prison”, was charged last month with possession of a “mobile telecommunications device” whilst in lawful custody at Portlaoise District Court on March 30,2010.
The native of Ballyfermot, Dublin was cleared in 2001 of the murder of journalist Veronica Guerin in June 1996, but was convicted by the Special Criminal Court in March 2001 of eleven offences of unlawfully importing cannabis resin into the State on various dates between July 1, 1994 and October 6, 1996, and unlawful possession of cannabis resin for sale or supply on the same dates.”
SNIPPET: “In March this year he was also given an eight months prison sentence at Portlaoise District Court for having a Nokia mobile phone in his cell at Portlaoise Prison on July 30, 2008.”
SNIPPET: “The court remanded Gilligan in custody until February 17 when the case will be mentioned again.”
NOTE: It is unknown to me if the freerepublic.com link in post no. 62 is related to the same graphite-related incident that is noted in the Irish Examiner article.
However, both the Irish Examiner article and the FreeRepublic.com thread as noted in post no. 62 are interesting.
THE SUN.co.uk - THE IRISH SUN: "TRAYNOR FREED FROM JAIL 'BY CHRISTMAS'" by Joanne McElGunn, Crime Editor (SNIPPET: "He fled Ireland in 1996 after the horror slaying of brave crime reporter Veronica, 37. And two years later, gangland boss John Gilligan, 60, told the High Court it was Traynor, 63, who had her shot dead.") (April 27, 2012)

“THE GROG FATHERS
Drug lords lived it up in jail but party was well and truly over”
(February 24, 2013)
SNIPPET: “Anne has revealed how Tony had beaten her continuously through their marriage. Her last baby, Benito, died a few days after birth when his liver collapsed as a result of her heroin addiction. “I was near comatose in the hospital and he (Tony) was spoonfeeding me heroin,” she told murdered reporter, Veronica Guerin.
HIV positive Tony also introduced his children to the horror of heroin addiction.”
SNIPPET: “The last man smiling in our prison snaps - John Gilligan - has fared no better locked behind bars than his old buddies. In 2002, he was tried and acquitted by the Special Criminal Court for the murder of Veronica Guerin.
His original sentence of 28 years for drug crimes was reduced to 20 on appeal, but he got a further two years in 2002 for threatening to kill two prison officers, another eight months in 2011 for possession of a mobile phone in 2008, and six months in 2012 for possession of a mobile phone in his cell in March 2010.”
