If a person seems to be a good person (not shallow, not liberal, not mean), we don't pick on their looks no matter how bad they look.
If a person seems to be a not-so-good person, we pick on their looks AND on their other failings.

Fine and dandy, but Ann's opinion (and mine) is that looks shouldn't be part of it. Can you honestly say that when Freepers were attacking Chelsea Clinton's looks when she was a teen, it was because she had demonstrated her shallowness? Of course not.
