BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- The U.S. military recovered the bodies Tuesday of two missing soldiers from an area it said was rigged with explosives. An Iraqi official said the Americans were tortured and killed in a "barbaric" way.
An insurgent group claimed the new leader of al-Qaida in Iraq executed the men personally, but it offered no evidence. The U.S. military did not confirm whether the soldiers died from wounds suffered in an attack Friday or were kidnapped and later killed.
The discovery of the bodies dealt a new setback to U.S. efforts to seize the momentum against al-Qaida in Iraq after killing its leader, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, in a June 7 airstrike. Violence was unabated Tuesday, with at least 18 people killed in attacks nationwide, including a suicide bombing of a home for the elderly in the southern city of Basra.
Coalition forces spotted the American soldiers' bodies late Monday, three days after the men disappeared following an attack on their checkpoint south of the capital, the military said. But troops delayed retrieving the remains until an explosives team cleared the area after an Iraqi civilian warned them to be alert for explosive devices.
"Coalition forces had to carefully maneuver their way through numerous improvised explosive devices leading up to and around the site," the military said in a statement. "Insurgents attempting to inflict additional casualties had placed IEDs around the bodies."
Maj. Gen. William Caldwell said the bodies were found together in the vicinity of an electrical plant, which would be just a few miles from where the initial attack took place near the town of Youssifiyah in the volatile Sunni Triangle south of Baghdad.

That's what my son would say
Barf.
How many ways and times can we say the war is not over, but we did get a major bad guy. We'll get this wanna be leader too.
Be strong, stay vigilant!

You will have to ask the lefties in the US State Department that question.
Nope. Not that I'd have to know that war is killing.
Pops did two tours since he was USAF and knew he'd be stationed at Than Son Nut and that way his brother in the Army would do his overseas in Korea (ironically during the Pueblo fiasco). Of course all the great uncles and both grandpas enlisted in WW2. Uncle Donald in at Normandy a month after the landings all the way through the occupation. Grandpa Hicks was USMC and Grandpa Barker was USN (another great uncle as waist gunner, the roles of others I can't claim to remember). My family has the military bit pretty well covered, and doesn't shy from sharing their views.
I don't really understand the suprise expressed. Two guys. It's a tragedy for the families, but it ain't Antietam. What'd you expect to happen when we went to war? Would it be better if the terrorists achieved their killing with satellite guided bombs instead of cell phone activated?
If we're going to station troops in the Middle East there are nutjobs who will try to kill them. 1 billion muslims, it doesn't even take a large percentage to take mortal offense at our presence to keep up the fight a long time. They're looking at this as the Crusades, Part XIVWhatever. They got homefield, and plenty of time.
Do you think China will take up the White Man's Burden and try to post troops in dozens of countries and fight the wars of the local governments? Or are they smarter than that?
Code Pink, where are youoooooooooo........?
The Japanese were brutal and barbaric. The Kamikaze pilots were as suicidal as Al Qaida and just as fanatical for much the same reasons - the promise of eternal bliss after their "honorable" suicide. - I know a man who was a prisoner on the Bataan Death March who took a Japanese guard's bayonet in the back of his neck which came within an inch of severing his jugular vein. - Lest we forget, Al Qaida is evil but nothing new really.
"Nope"
figures...
you could have saved the rest of your response...
I just read the entire article, and unless I somehow missed it, I cannot find the word "mutilated" in there. Bear in mind that in this context "mutilated" typically means castrated, which is certainly a possibility, but which I don't see in the article.
Sometimes, their moral compass is not true as you would like.
For radical ragheads, whose sole purpose on this planet is to kill as many of you, in the most grusome manner as possible, putting youself in their control is shall we say.. not a good thing.
Personally, I think those who are in harm's way, and have a choice to make, re fight to the death versus be captured, I believe their minds are (if they were not already) quite made up at this point in time.
I believe we are going to see a noticable drop in enemy, and noticably more violet resistance should our side come under attack.
***I have never, ever even heard of an enemy like this one.***
You might check out the American Indian wars.
I live in Arizona
it was reported on Fox News tonight
we won't get into the details out of respect for the Soldiers and their families.

The Democrats were on America's side in WWII, but I'm not so certain about the liberals, aka Communists.
you could try and address it, but I realize you'd rather not stick to the 'rah-rah' bit...
You don't know this.
