I've seen too many times where the goalie is being pressured from within the penalty area, a shot hits the post or crossbar, but then the follow-up shot by the offense is a "no goal" because of an off-side violation.I could be rusty on this, but a shot on goal is not a pass, and is not subject to the offside rule. I noted an exception to this in the American game, where a player moved out of the way of the shot.

I could be rusty on this, but a shot on goal is not a pass,I may be wrong, but I believe that a shot that hits the goal post or crossbar is not a shot on goal, so the offside ruling is still in effect.

Right. Being in an offside position is not in itself illegal.
That was a case of the referee blowing the whistle because the ref judged that the US gained an advantage because McBride was offside, even though he didn't touch the ball.
